I'm replanning my case airflow and cooling so it is more efficient. I modded my WaveMaster to hold a 120 mm on the front and this fan will obviously get thru the drive cage. I have 2 hard disks and I'm thinking of putting both of them above and below the 120 mm fan so it make a tunnel. This tunnel would obviously cool one side of each hard disk as well.

Since the Raptors run a bit hot, I wanted to make sure to put it where there is enough airflow on a side to cool it. I thought the belly ( the side with the circuit board) would deserve more cooling since it's part of the shell but I still hesitate so I'm asking anyone with experience to tell which side should get some airflow ?

Maybe not enough room to do this, but you should have a drive 1/3rd from the bottom and top of the fan to get airflow on both sides. It's the drive spindle and other mechanical parts creating the most heat, so I'd make sure the fan is over the top of the drive since heat rises not matter which side is up. One of the things I love about my case is it mounts the drives sideways in it's cage so both sides get equal cooling.

I am in a similiar situation with my 2 drives and an 80mm fan.

I chose to have the 80gb hitachi cooled both top and bottom and my WD to have just the top cooled. My WD has avg 2-5deg difference in temps, and when you feel the board underneath compared to the hitachi it is burning hot, but nothing too serious like my old emachiens setup 2 yrs ago where I had NO fan at all. They REALLY burned you, im talkin about burns that persist to hurt a day later... 60c+http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/6725/hdsetupmf0.th.jpg (http://img258.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hdsetupmf0.jpg)

Yeah, I guess I'll put the caviar which should run cooler in the bottom so only the top get cooled. The Raptor would be on the 1/3 top part of the fan so both sides is cooled without impeding too much on the airflow.

I will do experiments and watch the temps with SpeedFan to make sure it's all fine and nice. If needed, i'll get a cooling enclosure and put the disks on the 2 free 5 1/4" bays then leave the bottom part totally free.
