I've received the Areca 1261ML controller yesterday and installed it on an Asus A8N32-SLI.

I've been playing with the control panel a bit and noticed that the CPU temperature is at 70º Celsius (158F) and the controller temperature is at 66º Celsius (151F).

Anyone knows if these temperatures are normal on this type of raid cards? Also, there isn't any raid created yet since I'll only receive the disks tomorrow so I'm afraid that one an array is up and running the temperatures will increase even more!

Thanks,
Steven

Simple processors like the IOP331 can generally take high temperatures; I don't have time to look up that chip and see just how high. However, there may be another explanation - the utility may be reading the temperature wrong. Touch the heatsink (carefully, it might be hot! and groundedly - can't hurt to take the precaution) and see if it's really 70C. I think you'll be able to judge.

Yeah touch gently nothing like grabbing something burning hot and burning your hand.

The 1261ML actually uses the IOP341 processor. I touched it with my hand and it does seem very hot. I can't hold my finger there for over a second if much.

I have contacted the vendor where I bought it from as well as Areca to see if these temperatures are within the normal range and I'll report back when I get an answer.

Thanks for the correction. Between the 960, 303, 331 and 341, it's a miracle if I ever remember right.

Maximum operating temp on the 341 is 100C. Since a heatsink is mounted, the chip should handle ambient air temperatures up to 70C+. The chip is tested to operate at 85C for 2000 hours, so it shouldn't be a chip-killer while you get this resolved.

Ok, I got a reply from Areca support. They said that 70C is perfectly fine. The controller has a onboard sensor which will sound an alarm if over 90C.

I don't have any airflow atm trough the card so I guess once I have some the temperatures will decrease a bit.

Oh, and under 60C is what they consider an optimal temperature to run the controller.

Thanks for the info that is good to know.
