Ok i'm hoping you guys can help me out with this. I've just recently set up a RAID-5 with an Areca 1210. The transfer speeds are decent but don't seem to make sense and not quite what I was expecting. Both my read and write speeds seem to hover right around 90MB/s.

I expected the read speeds to be singificantly higher than the write speeds for a RAID5 so I'm not entirely sure why this is happening. I'm using 4xSeagate 7200.8s. I'm wondering if something else isn't bottlenecking it or if these speeds are about what would be expected. Running HDTach shows the 90MB/s transfer speeds with the burst speeds just over 500MB/s. I was honestly expecting read speeds to be well into the 100s on top of being significantly higher than the write speeds.

I have an Areca 1130 with 7x500GB in RAID 6. I benched it with HDTach at 250 MB/s for avg read, so I would think something is wrong. How many and what kind of drives?

What is your cache policy OP?

The drives are 4xSeagate 7200.8 at 250GB each in RAID-5.

It's set to Write-Back. I'm still hoping to test with read-ahead caching settings and write-through mode but haven't had time.

It's stuck in a 16x crossfire slot but even 1x PCI-E speeds I'd think would be well above the numbers I'm seeing and I'd expect read/write speeds to differ. I got the numbers from both HD Tach and watching the performance monitor in windows.

My 6x250 raid5 hits 160MB/S read on a highpoint 2220. It only hits about 64 MB/S on the writes tho b/c of the parity.

I did some testing in this thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=732267) about the differences between WB and WT if you're interested.

Areca 1230 with 5 7200.10 500 gig drives i think i'm hovering right around 170meg/sec read and write, more than fast enough for what i need it to do.
