I purchased a Linksys WRT54G route rant tried everything to get it working, my friend is a tech support he says vista could be partially responsible. I would like to nail down if it's vista that's blocking my internet connection though the router, My plans for the router were just to use it with my ps3, it would save me moving the system and running a long cable.

I had no connection with my Linksys either. I finally installed a new Lan card driver for my Asrock MB (just released driver) and the router connects to the Internet instantly. Hope this helps.

No problems here with the same router and running Ultimate.

is your network card even connecting to the router? Is Vista even seeing your network card?

Vista and routers shouldn't even be a factor because you have to connect to the router in some way. Then once connected, there are standards how your network card talks to the router.

No problems with my WRT54G.. routers should not be affected by the operating system.. it may be an issue with your network card and/or drivers for it.

I connect directly to my modem and it's no problem. the minute I plug in the router it fails to connect to my modem, windows does recognize the router, and I see status bar and says pc to router ok, router to internet is a red bar and it says not connected to internet. I went to set up and tried it on automatic, I am also using verizon as my connection through an old westell modem.

are you power cycling your modem?

Your PC and your router have different MAC addresses...if the modem detects something with a MAC that it wasn't using before, it will not give it an IP...try power cycling the modem.

I did that, shut down my pc, disconnected modem and router, first connected modem let it connect, then plug in router wait till it's finished then I booted the pc, no luck, I can tell i'm off because vista wont even display temperature. I went to my mobo site, there's not much for vista besides some things but not the lan drivers. I even tried manually going into the router, tried on automatic, then released the address and refreshed it. I set it on automatic, I don't think it's PPOE since I never had to use a password to connect unless I install the verizon software wich you don't need to connect.

Yea, I have issues with Vista and my D-Link DI-604 router. I've got it working now but it takes a long time to discover the internet connection, see this thread.

Someone on another forum said this may be the culprit in Vista.

How is it an improved TCP stack if my friggin' router that works fine with every other OS has issues with Vista?

nic = ethernet card

OK hatchet is buried everything is fixed. Called linksys the problem was that my westell modem was also a router but not a wireless one so it used the same address as the linksys, they even ran me through the setup process. Now on to tackle the PS3.
