Title says it all. What's the word?

As has been discussed at length in other posts...it depends. Long-term, 64-bit holds obvious appeal. Short-term - it depends on whether or not your other hardware has drivers, and whether or not software you care about works correctly right now.

So - the title doesn't quite say it all. :)

If your devices all have support for 64 bit drivers than yes for sure get 64 bit. We hit the 2gb recommandation in games(for 32bit). Wont belong befor its 4gbs(specialy with vista). And due to crappy 32bit limits of 4gbs of total ram support(vga, system memory and other minor things).

I would go with 64, not because you need it right now, but maybe a year from now you will want to put 4gb's or more in your computer. If you have any odd components I would check online to see if it supported, but most of my stuff in windows xp 64bit is supported so I would assume that vista would have around the same support.

I would say install 32bit now. Don't deal with the headaches. Then, by the time 64bit kicks in, you'll probably feel like doing a little spring cleaning of your OS anyway, so you can just do a fresh install.

Good call. Thanks.

go 64bit. Do it out of protest!

seriously, if everyone plays it safe and goes 32bit, we'll never get to 64bit. We dictate the market. Install vista 64bit and never install 32bit. Tell everyone you know to install 64bit vista.

Sure some drivers may not exist... but so what. Thats the point of going 64bit now, the more people do it now, the sooner we'll see real 64bit support from the hardware companies.

So play it safe and go 32bit... hold the rest of us back that are going 64bit because it matters and its time to take a stand.

Microsoft failed. There shouldnt even be a 32bit Vista.

Install 64bit vista now.

You bought a 64 bit CPU, use it.

Not doing so would be like buy a Ferrari and never driving it over 55 MPH (my favorite analogy for this).

If your machine has primarily new hardware in it, it's practically guaranteed to have working drivers for Vista across the board. You might have issues with Creative soundcards (because Creative sucks ass) and with Nvidia graphics boards (because Nvidia is just slow and dullish).

Aside from that, I'll bet you'll enjoy the 64 bit versions better overall.

Yes, but Vista 64 is like having a Ferrari with an engine that can go 120mph, but the tires are only rated for 85mph. If the 64 bit software isn't there, the 64bit OS isn't going to give him that big of a boost.

Firingsquad's new Vista article showed X64 beating X84 in 3dmark and games by a slim margin across the board.

However XP was still beating vista due to driver support on the Nvidia side.

Bleh... you're ruining my analogy. A Ferrari is the whole package soooo...

Now if you'd said a kit-car Ferrari, then it would have worked. :D

There's nothing wrong with Vista 64 bit editions. Once again, the only person that can answer the question presented is:

You - and by that I mean the OP. He needs to install each and make his choice based on performance, compatibility, etc. Asking about it will only generate more questions and speculation. First-hand experience on the hardware in question is the only way he'll know for sure what's best for him.

I still say go for it, however... put the pedal to the medal, and break those wheels for blocks :p

Good call. Thanks.

LOL so he ignores the first 3 opinions and agrees with the first one that jives with what he was apparently looking for. Why even bother asking?

I would say that's not exactly accurate. The lack of 64-bit software doesn't stop Vista itself from taking advantage of 64 bits. And besides, there are some very useful apps out there that DO have 64-bit ports right now (7-zip comes to mind, and Windows Media Encoder)

I like this analogy better: Vista 64 is like having a Ferrari that can do 120, but the only place with smooth enough roads to go that fast is your own street :D

EDIT - and maybe down to the quickie mart :p

120? Damn, you people are slow drivers... I was thinkin' more in the 180 MPH range, go figure ;)

And yes, my analogy holds because I'm talking about Vista itself, and not all the software/applications/etc that might be added later on, like luggage in the so called trunk of a Ferrari. Might slow it down a bit, but hell, it's sure a damned fun ride.

True, I've hit 120 in my POS car that cost less than my computer :p But I was just running with what he said :D
