So I recently purchased Home Premium Upgrade Academic and it came with only the 32-bit DVD with an insert directing me to the Microsoft site to get the 64-bit version which i did (Paid $10 S&H). I've since installed the upgrade (32-bit) and have been running my apps and playing WoW just fine.

The 64-bit dvd came in the mail yesterday and I decided to change to the 64-bit. It doesn't boot in windows so i booted it on startup and ran through the setup process. When I entered the activation key (same one used to install the 32-bit early on). It told me that according to the key, I needed to install it on a partition with a current windows installation.

So how do i install 64-bit vista on a current activated 32-bit installation?
Will I need to reinstall XP then go to 64-bit?

When you install the 64 bit, if you are not going to format the 32 bit partition and install "on top", then simply do NOT enter the cdkey, and then install from there. When you hit the desktop in Vista64 the first time, run the setup.exe again from within windows, choose "upgrade", THEN enter the cdkey and install it again, (yeah, like an upgrade) :D

At least this works on the 32 bit versions of upgrade dvd.
