View Full Version : No Love For UK Mac Ads

Steve

Not only do people in the U.S. hate those “I’m a Mac” commercials, it would seem some people in the U.K. don’t like them either (http://www.hardocp.com/news.html?news=MjM5NDksLCxobmV3cywsLDE=). I wonder if the U.K. actor get harassed like his U.S. counterpart does?

I hate Macs. I have always hated Macs. I hate people who use Macs. I even hate people who don't use Macs but sometimes wish they did. Macs are glorified Fisher-Price activity centres for adults; computers for scaredy cats too nervous to learn how proper computers work; computers for people who earnestly believe in feng shui.

It looks like that guy liked "PC" in the ads more than the Mac guy. This is interesting because most people like "PC" guy (Hodgeman) way more than "Mac" guy (Long) in the US versions.

No, seriously, shut the hell up. It's a computer, for Pete's sake. Whatever gets the work done gets it done. I have both. I use both equally. It's a user preference, and you guys are turning it into a liberal vs. conservative argument. Every once in a while you've got to admit it:

It's a computer. It does what I need it to do. If you don't like it, that's too bad.

Now quit your whining...

I've never had a problem with the MAC ads as a PC user. One day I'll probably buy a MAC just to get familiar with it because of it's growing popularity and hence growing need for those who can support one. I tend to think of a MAC as a computer for people that just want to use and a PC more for those who want to understand the computer as a tool.

I've read this article twice, and i laughed harder the second time.

If the ads were really honest, Webb would be standing there with one arm, struggling to open a packet of peanuts while Mitchell effortlessly tore his apart with both hands. But then, if the ads were really honest, Webb would be dressed in unbelievably po-faced avant-garde clothing with a gigantic glowing apple on his back.

I don't think most here hate Macs. If you are anything like me it is the years and years of constant flac and lies Mac users have flipped me that made me sick of Macs. I have friends that use Macs, and one got so mad when I simply mentioned that Macs were soon to use Intel processors, she hung up on me!! Yet she has told me time and time again that Bill Gates is evil and Microsoft is like the Axis powers in WWII or something.

She and other Mac users also seem convinced that thier computers are better at doing everything, and I am using some dirty, slow, ugly, piece of junk. Almost like I am lower in social status or something. I don't see Steve Jobs giving millions of dollars away to any causes, so I just don't know what makes him such a good guy compaired to Gates. I also don't see any SLI Mac systems out there that can come close to my machine in games, but I don't mention that to my 'Apple' friends, because I risk getting hung up on, or getting the latest round of bull on how Macs are faster, better, etc.............it's exausting

I second yojimbo. I don't get why people develop this blind hatred for a computing platform. It's just close minded fan'ism. .... ~~***Use Linux!***~~ :D

As far as the article. It's not even worth reading IMO. It stinks of venom and bile more than most anti-mac writings and really has no constructive points or supportive reasoning behind it. Just a chain of "I hate mac" statements.

Why don't you knock it off with the negative waves? Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

I like Macs - I'm going to shift camps to Mac with my next laptop purchase, and I quite like the US adverts, and as a life-long PC user I actually directly identify with some of the points they raise

BUT

I found it more than a little insulting that they felt the need to de-americanise the scripts...the Atlantic may be quite a big pond, but I think we understand one another. I like both the actors used for the UK versions as well - however - they just don't suit the roles. Can't think who would really...but it's not them.

As for the whole polarisation of people to the two platforms - there are people in both camps who need a good kicking for behaving like complete children. The words used to describe the 'evangalists' of both platforms are, frankly, 100% interchangeable. I've seen some prize tossers mouthing off about how great PC's are...and I've seen some monumental wankers waxing lyrical about how awesome Macs are.

Both have plus points. Both have negative points. I intend to use both in whichever way gets the job done best.

My idea for a PC and Mac ad.

PC is going over some numbers with a calculator, and has a chart on a board behind him.
MAC is sitting at an artists desk going over some photos.

A whistle blows and Mac looks at PC, "Home time..." Pulls out an iPod and begins to untangle his head phones.

Mean while PC pulls off his suit to revel he is has military camos under neeth and pulls out a paint ball gun. Just then a crowd of other PCs walk in dressed the same. PC turns to MAC, "Want to come play with us?" Mac saies "No, I think I will just listen to some toons."

More PCs stream by hooting and hollering. The scene ends with Mac alone with his head phones on, quietly walking off screen.

Yea, i would agree with your statement. The mac's are liberals... its a comparison I make to Liberal politics as well...let me try to be more clear.. and elaborate on your terrific observation

Imagine a really good tasting cake, with chocolate icing, and sprinkles.. and i mean, the cake just looks absolutely great, and its sitting next to the ultimate crumb cake.. Now, some might say they're both as good.. I mean, there both unbelievable looking.. but here comes the tricky part, like most of the liberals arguments.. they look good, but they have no backing to them.. which in this analogy.. the chocolate icing looks great, taste great, but the dough beneath it is poison.. It takes likes poison, and it makes you sick to your stomach..

The ultimate crumb cake is a blessing in disguise, it looks rugged, i mean.. it just looks like a mess -- but a good mess, a mess of pure bliss, and a taste of this cake is refreshing, and the dough is soft.. and its absolutely amazing

Crumb Cake = Conservative = PC
Chocolate Cake = Liberal = MAC

I hate their ads too.

The Apple commercial reminds me of last years elections. Day after day of commercials. The clear losers would bash their competitors with implied lies and say nothing about what they were going to do. They were losers before the election and they were the losers after the election.

I can only imagine Apple's Marketing Agent just doesn't have anything to go with. Apple should really get out of the San Francisco area once and a while to see what the rest of the world is about and stop trying to market a fashion computer to guys. Even my wife has a Lian-Li.

Let's please not bring politics or stereotypes into this (it'll be hard, but try).

I'm far from conservative and I've never owned a Mac. Granted, they're super expensive, and PCs are naturally a more financially practical investment, but I've never had a big enough desire to own a Mac to actually buy one.

This isn't even a matter of political orientation. The general, uninformed public leans towards Macs because they're easy to use out of their pretty boxes. They also think spending twice as much as needed justifies their decision because if it costs more, it's supposed to be better.

Other people fall to custom. Many people around them swear by Macs, so they develop a presupposition that Macs are the best and non-Macs are weak and riddled with vulnerabilities.

I base my choice on the software community. When just about everything comes out for non-Macs first, that tells me something. I don't want to feel limited with software, and as my computer falls victim to time, I might want to upgrade a critical component and not just with more or better RAM.

While I know a lot of people who own Macs love computers and spend all day on them, I'm willing to bet that the general, uninformed public mentioned earlier doesn't spend any more time on their computer than they need to. It's a life supplement and not life itself.

That's the dumbest thing I've ever read, and why are we still using the stupid cake metaphor? Oh, that's right. It was yours.

You're right. I buy a PC so people think I'm liberal, because I publicize every time I build a computer. I call the newspaper about an article I've written that I'd like them to run for a week.

Psych.

If you actually buy into this political comparison, then you ought to strip down naked and take a shower of rocks, because, congratulations, Apple's marketing has brainwashed you.

ive got a better idea for a new pc/mac commercial. it goes something like this:
the pc guy and mac guy are standing next to each other. the pc guy goes hi im a pc and the mac guy goes hi im a mac. then i walk into the scene and proceed to beat the shit out of the mac guy. at some point during the beating i get a giant blender, i will call it the iBlender, and stick the mac guys feet into the iBlender. after running said iBlender for a few minutes, i make the mac guy drink his own feet. man that would be a great commercial.

Man, you guys don't even just politicize it you turn Mac commercial bashing into liberal bashing!

Granted, most of the idiots I know that use Macs are indeed aging middle class hippies.

However, I do know some rather conservative people that own ibooks as well, and when it comes to ipods...well I think just about everyone under the sun uses those.

I think anyone generally more conservative or liberal is overly attached to their emotions and makes their personal decisions based upon them. So generally I tend to think of both camps as morons. It simply puts my case in point that you bring your argument to a Mac thread.

Mac's are pointless, and now that hardware is synonomous all you are really paying for is a case/monitor. Personally I'll stick to my PC, whilst hoping that your platform dies away so I never have to learn how to support it. Frankly it's very annoying to work on.

These commercials epitomize everything I dislike about Apple. Although their OS is overrated, over hyped, and enormously not useful and inflexible (No one go all unix on my ass, though the base may be solid, it is what people do with it that counts), thier computers are overpriced and far too flashy, the scary part is the Apple lifestyle" that they promote. As said in the article, it screams ignorance and intolerance. Sure, there are some apple users who do not buy into this, but those that do are a bane upon this earth.

And, like many people, I have many fantasies about a retort to this ad campaign, usually involving violence brought upon the Apple representative. Someone should seriously consider releasing some of these ads, possibly in conjunction with the "Games for Windows" campaign.

The commercials are full of shit and promote an elitist point of view. They should dump the commercials and put the cash into reducing their exorbitant prices. Then maybe they would have something to talk that has foundations in reality, rather than poseur fantasyland.

If your product is that good, they should be able to advertise on those strengths.

Negative ads = inability to honestly compete on their own merits.

anyway, my view on macs is that there is nothing really wrong with the machines themselves. i had to put up with them in my old school, and u know what??? it wasnt terrible. granted, i vastly prefer pcs, as gaming, upgradeability and self-building are important to me. that being said, its the ignorant fools who think macs are the greatest thing to grace this earth since sliced bread that i hate. its even wors when they have absolutely no technical reason, saying things like "it's just better" or "well, you wouldnt know, owning a pc, but its MUCH faster." here's an example of such an encounter from just the other day:

me (~1 week after i diagnosed his $5000 alienware laptop . i know its weird, dont ask): so did you get your alienware fixed?
him: nah, it isnt worth it. im going to get a mac!!!
me: why on earth would you do that? you have a laptop i would kill for.
