Does anyone know if you will be able to upgrade from Business to Ultimate through the anytime upgrade 'feature' if the license key is from MSDNAA?

I am hoping to get Ultimate edition and my school is giving me a copy of Business for free.

I couldn't find any info on this online, I may just not be looking in the right places or the info may not be available yet, if it isn't available yet just ignore this I guess.

Also, does anyone know if when you do the upgrade if its software only or if they give you a new license key? So if you reinstall would you be able to just go straight to Ultimate instead of doing say Business then upgrading to Ultimate again

Pretty sure it's a new key, that allows you to unlock the desired version off the anytime disc.

Keep us posted on your situation. I'm also interested in doing this as well but I'm still waiting for my msdnaa site to update with Vista Business.

I just installed business edition, and when I am trying to do anytime upgrade it asks for a username/password and it is apparently not a .net account it wants and I don't know how to get one so I guess for now I/we are out of luck?

www.windowsanytimeupgrade-na.com is the website requesting login info.

Well, looks like anytime upgrade won't work until the 30th according to M$FT

Guess I'll be reinstalling windows now with the universal key to try out ultimate edition see if i should bother upgrading from MCE

Both Ultimate and Home premium are required if you want top play around with pictures and dvd playing recording etc I've read some posts that say Business will be better for gaming

I definitely need Ultimate; Gaming, Media Center, and Remote Desktop are all going to be used frequently >.< So Ultimate only one with all of em. unfortunately; If there was a way to get media center in business I'd just do that but I don't think that's possible?

If you choose to use the Anytime Upgrade feature and pay to upgrade your copy to Ultimate then your license will convert to an OEM license which (always has been) once sold and installed can no longer be moved to another machine.

I can't seem to find the reference where this can be confirmed at microsoft. I was at a launch event YESTERDAY, and when I asked that question the speaker was surprised at that, however, he didn't want to "obligate" himself to saying that it wasn't true, either.

Can someone show me a www.microsoft.com based link that says

"If you upgrade to ultimate from business, you are locked into a single machine, so there!"

?

I nominate this string of letters (and it's brothers microshaft, m$, micro$oft) for !!! replacement much like the f-a-n-b-o-y word is automatically replaced with !!!

Everyone who complains about microsoft being $$ greedy should look at apple, (charging $100 for a 'service pack' ) or just go with the supposedly superior *Nix solutions.

It's really time we grew up on here, and stopped bitching out microsoft for being a successful business. You think Vista is expensive? Check legacy prices of things like actual Unix... $5,000 o/s purchase was commonplace.

Vista shows the fact that price is based on feature set. Ultimate is business with media center. People have no problem paying $30 for winDVD, $100 for nero ultimate 7.. Yet, vista ultimate has a dvd player and cd/dvd burning functionality.

Don't like microsoft's "High priced" os? Then move to chile, bolivia, or afghanistan, and buy vista starter for $50, and use a freeware alternative for every damned thing you want to do.

Microsoft is no longer (never really was) the big evil empire, and we really need to act like adults. There are like, 2800 NEW features in vista. At $400, that's like 14 cents a piece.
Red Hat Linux (remember, linux is that free software...) (http://h30094.www3.hp.com/product.asp?sku=1938921&jumpid=ex_r2910_performics/k4720/DDI%20Link)Oh, wait.. what's that you say? It's $1500+ .. Lemme guess, you're paying for support, right? Well, I hope you get a lot of it, cause that's the ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTION price.

hooooo.......hold your horses. Not that i will argue with you about microsoft being evil or windows being overpriced or not (i believe neither is the case), but you're comparing server operating systems with Windows workstation os'es.

Windows Server 2003 is not $300 either. You'll pay for server OS'es (licensing) and you pay quite a lot. Doesn't matter if it's windows based or *nix based.
