So based on the chart...it doesn't have all the bloat. When you come to the end of the list, it says "Home Basic is useless and you should never consider it!" But why not? Flip 3d and Aero isn't that exciting (using Ultimate now btw). You will have a smaller install, less shit going on in the background, etc. If you're like me, Media Center is useless as I just use WMP. So with further tweaking....wouldn't Home Basic be better bang for the buck when it comes to upgrading for a gaming comp?
I'd have bumped the other topic on this but it seemed to have turned into a 'lets compare how much ram vista uses to linux' thread. Can we keep it on topic this time? lol I'm sorta debating on formatting and trying Basic out.

I would like to know about this as well. I mainly use my rig for gaming and reason for upgrading to Vista is for DX10. I'm sure there will be theme patches coming out soon so the aero shouldn't be much of a problem.

Hm.. interesting. It does seem as though the only difference between the OS's is the lack of flash + can't really use as a server + no scheduled backups.
Never really considered basic as an option, good question :O

You guys know that Aero turns off the second you start a game, right?

They prolly know, but they are just saying that there might be many [H]'ers out there that just dont give a shit about Aero and the extras and will just want to pay the lowest possible price for DX10.
I however, think that the amount of [H]ers that should go the Basic route is a very very very small number, simply because the amount of money it takes to upgrade to Premium is very small (around 20-30 bucks.... which is as much as a f-ing expansion pack). Yea, there might be a little more bloat, but thats nothing that v-lite (nlite for Vista) wont fix, and its nice to know that if you want the new Vista features, they are there.

This is true...but why pay the money for the extra stuff when you might just remove it anyway. Thats basically what I'm saying. Sure its nice to have the extras but if you go the route many of us have done with XP and remove all the extra shit to make the system as fast as possible, why not go the cheaper route and START with as little as possible?

Interestingly enough, I've found that leaving Aero enabled seems to leave my system more stable and quick to react than if I disable it. I suspect its due to using the 3d card to render the ui rather than the CPU.
Either way you're using some resources from either the CPU or GPU to keep the windows UI loaded under your games.
Otherwise I'd say Home Basic would be fine for games.

Yes, it still will be a good gaming OS (once all whql drivers are released), since it uses the same WDDM and DX10.
