What to do when HL2 wont install because of disc error?

okay, here's an old familiar story.

I just tried to install HL2 on my recently built system and the installation is hanging on disk number four with some sort of stupid reading error. I remember this happening to lots of people way back then but it didnt happen to me so therefore I didnt pay too much attention to the problem.

well, guess what? now thats happening to me with this new system and I'm wondering what can I do? it seems as though this only affected certain machines but obviously not all.

so is there a way around this or what? someone please help....

um...can't you install steam and then download it? i mean the key should be tied to your account so that should allow downloading right?

I have that same problem and i realized what I was doing wrong when I noticed a little sheet in the box with the game from Valve, it said that during the installation both HL2 and CSS should be installed or an error may occur, and that you could remove CSS after the installation if necessary. So being me I ofcourses did not installed CSS with HL2 as advised, and sure enough near the end of the installation an error message came up and the install was canceled. I tried this 3 times, all of which generated the exact same error. I would assume this is what is happening to you install.

Yeah, that happened to me too. Just install everything and you will be fine.
