I've got two computers here, one is a laptop with a built in wireless card and the other is a desktop with a USB wireless network adapter.

I can connect to the other computer in an ad-hoc configuration (at least windows shows that I'm connected) but I can't see either computer when I check work group computers and I can't access in internet across the wireless connection.

Any help?

Im going to assume that you have the desktop connected to your modem via ethernet (why dont you have a router is a mistery, cuz that will solve the problem instantly). Because one of the pc's must be connected to the modem to be connected to the internet, If not, then they can only communicate with each other, whithin the wireless range. If so then you can use the option to share internet through the desktop.
Now, im assuming that you want "piggy back" from the desktopto connect to the internet via ad hoc.
To make things simple get a router, cheap one if you wish, and all problems aresolved.

I know a wireless router would solve all my problems, but this is at my college, not my home. I don't want to leave an expensive router there for someone to steal, but I wouldn't mind losing this cheep USB wireless network adapter.

Before you ask, the campus already has a wifi network, but the building I'm in blocks it compleatly (brick on all sides and another floor above me). Short of attaching a couple of huge antennas to my laptop in an attempt to get a signal, I figured plugging in a cheep USB wireless network adapter (into one of the computers in the lab next door) would be a more full proof method.

So yeah, the desktop PC in the next room is hard wired in. I plugged in the USB box and set up an ad-hoc network. I get a nice strong signal and can connect to the computer in the lab, but can't access the internet.

Edit: Just had an idea...maybe bridging the two connections would do the trick?

Why he doesnt have a router, is easy to figure out. He is bridging a connection between a computer that isnt his, with a usb wireless nic, sure would seem against rules to me, so even though I know the answer, cant help.

Is it really any different from walking outside of the building and accessing the wireless network that covers the rest of the campus (which is completely open for students to use)? I'll be on the same network either way.

My other option is plugging a larger antenna into my laptops wireless card, which might give me enough of a boost to connect to the campus wifi inside this dead zone.
