on one of my pc's i have a an35 ultra with a simple ide setup, the disk drive on primary, dvd on secondary
i need to access an hard drive on a broken pc so i added it to the 2nd ide channel
done this all the time before on many different systems but this time i get a wierd error
first it takes forever to load at bios screen as it detects ide devices
when its finally done loading it says no 80 conductor is installed but it reports the disk drive setup correcty
however after "verifying dmi pool"
an nvidia boot agent prompt comes up saying boot failure, insert disk

i disconnect the second drive and it works like normally

anyone have any ideas? thanks

It sounds like its trying to boot from the wrong drive...
try installing it on the primary channel as a slave ..

You mean the 2nd drive jumpered as master and put on the secondary channel right?

Actually I meant take out the DVD drive and try it on the master channel..as a slave.

well i played with the boot order so that couldnt be the problem

however i disconnected the dvd and put the 2nd hard drive in its place and it works now
however im almost 90% sure its going to screw up if i reconnect the dvd rw on the 2nd ide channel

How do you figure something is going to screw up? You could always get a disk controller than you can put the 2nd drive on so your system will work. See if you can borrow one from a friend, if not, I would recommend purchasing one (although, this may lead to purchasing of more drives :p)

Just put the DVD drive on the secondary channel...thats where it belongs anyway...
You should always try and avoid putting optical drives on the same channel as HDD's
