How do I check my SATA HD Temp?

I can only see my IDE HD with PC Wizard, but for my SATA HD I cannot see the temp.

I have tried using Speedfan and the Western Digital Diagnostics, but after installing either and trying to run them, my PC will just restart.

Also my SATA HD is making a weird sound, it is as if is spinning faster than usual, like the speed goes up and down making a buzzing sound, like some kind of vibration inside the case.
And this is usually with no programs running on idle. After the PC has been on for a while.

I would also highly recommend you back up anything important off that drive if it sounds like something is mechanically wrong. Is the drive SMART enabled?

SMART is enabled in the BIOS on a per drive basis.

SMART constantly monitors the drive's performance, and by looking at the numbers can predict whether the HD is likely to fail soon. It's a bit like an early warning system so you can back up your info.

I'm just unsure what you meant about the noises coming from the drive. It could just be a loose screw, but often it could be a mechanical problem which will eventually result in a dead drive. Just a friendly word of warning to make sure you've got an extra copy of whatever you need off that drive.

Are you running the latest BIOS? Depending on the motherboard you may need to provide SATA drivers via a floppy before you enter the BIOS.

EDIT: You may want to try and run Everest to check your HD temps.

i did, I installed the Sata drivers with a floppy when I installed Windows XP, and the drive aside the problem above seems to be working fine, all programs are running fine.
Except when I try to run one of those programs to check the temp, when I do it just restarts the PC.

The thing is you didn't actually install any SATA drivers with that floppy. You just provided the installation with the drivers it needed to recognize the drive until Windows took over with its own SATA driver.

The reason you even had to bother in the first place with using a floppy to get Windows to recognize the drive is because the BIOS doesn't have the correct drivers to communicate with the controller. So, since the SATA drivers load up after the BIOS, you can't see the drives in the BIOS.

Have you tried MBM5 (motherboard Monitor 5). I have 2 SATA drives (one 36GB Raptor and 160GB WD) in my system and it picks up the temps for both.

BTW, which motherboard are you using?

If you boot to the floppy which has the drivers for your controller you should be able to move from there.

oh boy...

it depends on the motherboard. oftentimes you cannot boot to any USB devices with some older motherboards, but it's worth a try.
