I heard that a poor sound (ie: low-quality onboard audio) can effect your (ultimately) FPS's. Is there any truth to this? If so, how much/what difference does it make?

Using onboard audio can lower your fps because all audio processing is done on your processor. Whereas if you had a dedicated sound card, the audio is processed by the sound card not the cpu. More available cpu=more fps
