View Full Version : Onboard Raid 5, Ok to replace motherboard?
I'm looking to get some more storage space and maybe update the system while I'm at it. If I goto Sata I would prefer to change over to a s939 setup. Do the motherboards work the same way as regular raid cards, if one dies you can replace it with no worries of losing data? I assume they would if they had the same bios but was wondering if anyone had some experience.

If its the same exact bios/chipset, maybe/probably. Any other chipset, any other bios, it is highly unlikely. Raid is not a standard format in any respect really, you are usually tied down to at least one thing (the controller, bios, or O/S).

I was wondering the same thing, so when my new mobo came (cheapo ASRock, so NOT the same chipset, etc), I backed up my data, pulled the drives, and moved them over to the new system.... imagine my surprise when the new system saw the array. A fluke? Perhaps.... back up the data and move the drives.... see what happens. :)
