I got an xfx 8800gtx this morning but im pretty sure somethings wrong. 6000 on 3DMark06 is worse than my 7800gt sli setup. I installed the drivers correctly, the only thing i can think is causing a problem is that i put the card in my 2nd pci-e slot (the stock HSF interferes with my chipset waterblock in the first slot). I was under the impression that it didn't matter....does it? anyone else having any trouble with the 8800gtxs?
thanks in advance

I tried the 3 latest driver versions and nothing changed. I dont believe that running it in my second slot is the problem. Im now thinking that its my ram maybe? My 2 gigs of G.skill is being RMAed because it fried so I am borrowing my friend's 1 gig of corsair pc3200. I also had to tone my OC down to 2.5GHz. Im guna do some testing see if i can figure anything else out

Not sure if this is true in all cases but I've seen lots of motherboards which were PCI-E 16x for the first slot but only 8x for the second slot.

Not sure if that's true in your case. Check the manufacturer's website.

You may also be limited by your cpu and ram?

the second slot recieves a maximum of 8 lanes. So that would be a minor problem but not a major one.

well my friend has something of a similar rig and almost the same score. he downloaded the regular Geforce drivers insteadd of the Geforce 8 drivers.

aside from that, could be lack of power. if the GTX detects not enough power it throttles back. whats your PSU?

i think its the slot, 8x is half. you probably gonna get double score in the correct slot (16x).

nop, it probably wont do that much of a drop in performance, not even a 8800gtx is able tu use the full bandwidth of a 16x lane, maybe it could mean a 5-10% drop in worst case,
whats your psu??

I don't even think the 8800GTXs use all of the bandwidth in an 8x slot. But going down to 1GB of ram and downclocking the cpu will lower your 3dmark score.

If you did download the wrong drivers, that could very well be the reason for not getting the expected performance.

If they made the 8800GTX for AGP, it would just as fast as a 16x PCI-E so it isn't the slot's problem. It has to be something else.

I figured it out and i feel kinda dumb. I had to enable SLI in the bios so the second slot is 8x not 2x. it read x2,x1,x1,x16 so i figured it detected the video card was in the last slot and was giving it x16 ;). thanks for all your input though

did you fix the problem? i thought it was the slot, interesting. what you score now?

Yup, 2x PCIe is going to slow down your video card considerably. 2x PCIe has about the same bandwidth as AGP 2x, around 500 MB/s. Cards push well over 1GB/s peak these days.

JVC- ya its kinda fixed...well as good as it gets for now. I scored 8,500 right now which is still way low but i figure having 1gig of crappy ram and a barely OC'ed opty 170 are to blame for that. The bandwidth of the second slot is still probably slowing me down too.

I gotta wait for G.skill to get off their butts and send me back my ram. They sent me an email today saying "We got RMA. sorry for long wait. we closed for holiday." they got the darn thing last tuesday! jerks.

Also gotta wait till stores get some waterblocks in stock so i can ditch the stock HSF and fit the card in the first slot. I believe ill be going with the swiftech mcw60 and adapter plate. I was talking to a guy at petra's today about what Arcygenical said in another thread, that his ramdac is running at 90C at idle with the ramsinks on there. that will be the only thing keeping me from going that route, but i think something is off about his system or something cause no one else has the problem.

Do you have SLI enabled on the motherboard? If not, the first slot is 16x and the second slot is 4x. When you enable SLI, it splits the lanes up to 8x and 8x.

Well i got my ram back today. so now its back to 2gigs of ddr500 ram. i did a mild overclock cause i didn't want to spend too much time on it right now. its at 270mhz now with a 5/6 divider for the ram cause it didn't want to go for some reason. did 3dmark and its up to 9700 and still in the wrong slot. so looks like having that extra gig of ram really helps.

Wow...for all the morons that said it wasn't the slot....some people just never learn, jeeze

the "morons" said running it in an 8x slot wouldn't cause the problem.

his problem was it was running at 2x!!!

so what the OP is saying is. On the 680i mobo, the blue slot (the middle 16X mechanical slot) will run in 2X mode unless SLI is activated in BIOS. If SLI is activated in BIOS, the slot runs at its full 8X potential. The slot never recieves a full 16 Lanes. It is connected to MCP, which is already supplying most of its bandwidth to the lower black full 16X slot. The middle slot never, at any point by ordinary methods, recieves 16 lanes

The card runs to its full potential with the 8 lanes. the slot he plugged the card into (the middle blue 8X one) never gets 16 lanes. The card is able to produce the usual astounding fps an 8800GTX can produce with only 8 lanes.

Please do not call me a moron, when you yourself have not got the facts straight.

so i was correct?! i was correct!!!!:p

no...

your saying the card wont work properly because it wants 16 lanes and is only getting 8.

In actuality, the card WANTED 8 lanes and was only getting 2.

No. you were 100% wrong. Switching from 8x to 16x will not improve performance much and certainly not *double* the score. Switching from 2x to 8x did improve the score by 2000 points maybe? But not by 4x as much.
