please see new post at the bottom.
So this weekend I pulled out my computer since I have the apartment to myself....no space for my machine so I use the other one.
No problems with it and whatnot.
Come home today turn on the screen and it froze.... ok.... maybe webshot is messed up (app it was stuck on) . Started with a simple alt+tab then classic task manager....then BAM blue screen.
restart and does not pick up the IDE drives :(
wait a while and try again... a-ok...temps are fine, virus scan comes up clean, just been on forums and watchin video's so I am baffled.
This computer is on 24/7 before I moved to my new residence and I usually do leave it on all the time. It has a 3 year old Western digital thats been thru about 7 reformats (disk issue?). installed the new 3800+ a month ago... everything else is a year old at the most. I cant find my XP cd :( and already went thru on patch tuesday of last week.
One of the on board sound connections took a nose dive a month ago so I have two audio connections instead of three. Is this motherboard done?
It gave me the screen for the second time about 5 minutes ago after I pulled the front cover since the drives might be overheating but I am guessing.
Thanks for your time everyone!

last time this happened to me, it was a cheapo $5 PCI sound card that crapped out on me.....but my problem didnt go away until i removed the culprit, it didnt just come back like your's did
i would start with uninstalling and re-installing device drivers if it becomes a problem, but an occasional BSOD, being very rare is somewhat normal for M$

will do... I tried to understand what the bottom portion of it was saying... first time it referred to a system process the second time it threw out some memory deal... ugh I know it has a name.... anyways I will...
ohh the board is this http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Overview.aspx?ProductID=1881&ModelName=GA-K8NSC-939

Culprit or just too easy? disabled it and will see what happens from here...
Acually I realized now that the "newest" install is this monitor I am using. 42 inch Philips I am running on 720P at 1216x684 at 60hz... connected via componet thru the HD out on the BFG 6600 GT.
I am going to try new beta of video driver and see if that clears things up.

You should have at least an event log created from the BSOD. If not also a minidump in the %windir%\minidump folder.
Check the event viewer maybe we can see what's going on.
Start >> run
eventvwr.msc
Sort by clicking the Type bar at the top of the right side window, then look for an Error event with the source System Error around the time of your problem.
Open it, and then copy the description area (you'll have to do it by highlighting all the text and pressing CTRL+C), then post it back here.

thanks for the reminder on the event viewer. havent had a bsod since i changed my video drivers last night to a new beta... looks like they dropped the project that my previous beta was developed on.
this morning before i left the system was fine but when i get home later this evening i will go thru my logs and go from there.
thanks everyone :)

Went thru event finder... i guess my old 30gig is giving out since its referencing to it at the time of the BSOD
no other errors other than that. System has been stable since so I call this now a warning instead of an error to replace my HD

well it happened again... this time i guess it will not handle it anymore.
currently it does:
when a video plays using direct x 9 it will flicker(the monitor) before it displays the actual video.
on start up the display flickers after login screen.
the harddrive starts to throttle before bsod appears.
i am currently trying to upload the picture via my cell of the latest bsod message along with reading the thread about it. this hdd that features the os had ben reformated about 6 times. time to buy a new main drive as the event logger last mentioned issues connecting to the hdd?
please let me know if its the hdd so i can go buy one or just buy another win xp cd to reformat again...or at worst do both thing. thx everyone for your time this holiday season!

What does "harddrive starts to throttle" mean?
It's pretty hard to come up with a diagnosis. We need lots more information.

when i say throttle ...to my understanding is when a device starts to make a clicking noise when it has reached its peak load. example i hear the hard drive click then.... click when it comes under extreme load .... however this load imo is minimal since its just firefox loading with 5 or more tabs loading along with objectdock... other than that everything is normal in terms of the processes that load on start up. (antivirus spybot ...the basics)
in this is still unclear let me know so i can elaborate some more.
one again thx everyone!
