I read that to upgrade to Vista Home Premium you have to have XP Media Center. Is this true or did I misunderstand what I read? I might be building a PC and would like to be able to purchase the retail upgrade to Vista Home Premium from XP Home.

No, I do not believe that is true. I think you must have misunderstood what you read.
Of course, I could be wrong, but like I said, I have never heard anything of the like...

You can upgrade from Pro, just not using the 'upgrade' option. Must be a clean install.

You can upgrade from Home, but the upgrade will cost a lot more, if you buy Home now with the upgrade coupon. OEM software for Vista will be out, right after the RTM launch. Be aware that the upgrade coupons with XP software, are tied to that software, and can't be installed on just any pc, just the one that you install the new software on.If you buy retail software, Vista might ask for a clean install, instead of just an upgrade, which is the best way to go.
