I heard from a friend that when you play a game in the ps3 it locks it so the game can't be played on any other ps3. Now I don't in any way believe this because it sounds completely stupid but at the same time does sound like something sony would do. So I ask you, is this true?

This was a heavily rumored feature in the Playstation 3, because I think Sony has technology that could make it possible to write a lead-in on a disc so that the first system you played the disc in would be binded to the disc.
However, there have been no reports of this technology existing in the actual PS3, and if it were there, I'm sure the net would have been flooded with news about it already (like from the Japanese gamers who got theirs a week ago).

Wow, that must be a pretty brokeback thing to do. It makes too little sense for the developers to even consider adding that.
What if your PS3 breaks? You'd need to replace every game to play it on your new one.

exactly same thing I'm thinking... it's a bunch of crap. You know how money hungry Sony can be thats why I am unsure of whether this is true or not. Anyone else have any info on this just to be absolutely positive

I'm sure this is bogus. Would completely destroy the game "rental" demographic as well.

Sony released a statement contradicting the rumors way back when...

That actually wouldn't be a bad thing for Sony (or any other video game company), hence the rumors.

I can already tell you from experience this is not true.
Stupid to even think they would do that. I don't care if it is Sony.

That is the whole point. This rumor started when Sony filed a patent for a technology that would effectively do what has been talked about. The disc would be locked to your console. If you wanted to sell the game to a friend the friend would have to effectively "buy" the game from the Sony online store. A small portion of the proceeds would be distributed to you the seller in the form of Sony store currency, or whatever they use. This way Sony keeps all the money, at the expense of course of royally screwing everyone else.
Sony hasn't done this, but they have the technology to do so. Personally if they did do this there would be such an uproar they would never be able to recover IMO.

To keep it simple, NO PS3 does not locks Discs.

Why did you even make a thread on this? It's common sense.
If it were the case that it did lock discs, then so much for renting games at your local Blockbuster, and/or buying games used. Likewise, so much for borrowing games from a friend, or bringing a game over to a friends house for them to try out, unless you expect to bring the whole console with you.

Except that in two to three days the forums will be flooded with the rumor that it's the gospel truth...lol

I doubt it would stop blockbuster etc, they'd just get a disc that didn't have that technology. Of course it would stop the used trade, but have you listened to devs lately? That's exactly what they want.

Because he had a question and wanted answers. Don't be a dick.
If someone told me that I would be questioning it, too.

Thank you FoxhoundOp
I thank you guys for your input and am very relieved that this is not true. I think the PS3 is awesome but if it locked the discs to that system when played then it would be a waste of money.

I hate how tone doesn't translate well over the internet. I didn't mean it like that... I'm just saying, that for all the reasons I listed, + more there would be no way that this would EVER happen.

Except that there was a rumor a few months back that this would be the case, with the intent of generally stopping used game sales (which Sony doesn't profit from).
Just because it would be a problem for your convenience doesn't mean that a corporation wouldn't do it for their bottom line. Thankfully, the rumor turned out to be entirely untrue.
