One of my friends in school just had his computer go poof. He isn't sure what is wrong with it, just that it doesn't work and that his report for a project was on it. He uses a RAID array though which seems to be a problem. Is it possible to transfer his two harddrives to another computer just so that he can get the drives recognized to get the file off? He said his computer used a Promise RAID in the motherboard, mine has the nVidia RAID solution.

Is it a raid 0 or a raid 1? Also if raid 1 was it a software array or done by a controller on the motherboard?
Also define poof. IE is windows just fucked up or does the machine have hardware problems?
If the machine just has software issues I would drop another hd in it and install windows to it then load the drivers for the raid card and pull the data. If the motherboard is shot your best bet is to try to find the same board to replace it to get the data. If the data is a raid 1 pull one of the drives and try to read it in another system. That way if it doesn't work you can find the same motherboard if it is a bad board and use it to still see the drive you didn't mess with.
