I have a choice of 320 GB Seagate SATA 300, 7200 rpm, 16 MB cache, NCQ Model no. 3320620AS

vs.

Samsung 300 GB SATA 2, 7200 rpm, 8 MB cache, model no. HD300LJ

this is going to be a data drive.

My primary concern is data reliability and noise. They are both fluid bearing, so there shouldn't be any noise, and I don't want to lose data.
Nothing else matters. Price of these 2 drives is almost the same.

So I was looking at the MTBF of these 2 drive. Samsung said this drive is 600K hr.only, which is 68.49 yr.

Whereas Seagate uses AFR (Annual Failure Rate) and shows 0.34%, which works out to 1/0.34% = 294.12 year. So it seems Seagate is 4.29 times more reliable than Samsung.

The other problem is Samsung OEM drive is like 1 or 2 yr. warranty, whereas Seagate OEM is 5 yr. (samsung retail is 3 yr.)

I checked this Samsung is made in South Korea, and the Seagate is made in Singapore.

So the obvious choice for data reliability and noise is Seagate. But I wonder if Seagate is using marketing technique on their 5 yr. warranty.

Because the cost of replacement on the drive's 4th or 5th yr. is so low that even if their drive only last 3 yr., they still made money from us in the sale, and simply gives replacement on the 4th or 5th yr. at low cost. It's like buying a P3 a no. of yr. ago and say the manufacturer gives 10 yr. warranty, and say if you need warranty on a P3 now--the entire P3 at refurbish cost is only $40. So the 10 yr. warranty becomes a marketing scam, NOT true quality and reliability.

I don't want to buy a Seagate and lost data on the 4th or 5th yr. What's you guys experience on Samsung or Seagate?

So I wonder

I have never owned a Samsung drive, but I have owned 3 7200.9 drives. They were very nice until I retired them (needed more space).

The seagate drive has a larger cache so it will be faster, and the extra warrantee is great.

Every samsung product I've bought in the past few year or two has been garbage, so they're pretty low on my list of reliable manufacturers.

I don't know about their drives, but my Samsung HLP-5085 (Capt'n Kirk) 50" DLP TV has been flawless for 2.5 years so far.

The original Up-convert DVD player of theirs I got was total rubbish. Remote range was good for about 3 feet (and no, I'm not kidding) and don't get me started on the bizarre video-output configuration method.

I guess I don't understand the 2nd part. How does a hard drive relate to a remote control?
