The cool tools you used to get from sysinternals.com are now available from Microsoft directly (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/)

I was surprised to see them on the MS site the other day. I had wondered why, I guess now I know. I just hope that this move will not affect the availability, quality or both of these tools. Though I must admit that the only two that I frequently use are filemon and regmon.

Which have been superceded by processmon.

Thanks for pointing me to that. It may make my life 'easier' when trying to get some apps to work in a limited user account.

Poke around some of the abandoned orphaned pages, and you can see some of what is now missing from the new site. Some stuff no longer has working downloads, and some stuff still does(at least at the moment).

If you can identify particular tools that you need which aren't available, I can have the team look into why they're not on the site. Some tools were discontinued; NTFS for Windows 98 isn't supported since Windows 98 isn't supported.

Thanks, but I don't guess i need anything in particular at the moment. It's just kinda sad to see useful things fade away into obscurity. I don't currently have any old Windows version running, but I do keep the disks around, just in case there is a purpose for them. The NTFS reader for DOS still seems like something good for putting on boot disks.

How much did Microsoft pay for Sysinternals? Enough to retire on?

Don't you think that is a bad thing? I would venture a guess that Mark probably would not have discontinued (at least in availability) a useful tool simply because Microsoft stopped supported the operating system it was used on. That situation is a direct result of Microsoft buying them out, and if you ask me it is a pretty crumby move.
With that said, I am extremely glad Microsoft decided to keep availability relatively close to what it used to be, and even continue work on many of the most popular tools. It's a good move by them- it's just, of course... not flawless ;)

Don't you think that is a bad thing?Without speaking on behalf of the company, I think it's not a bad thing. We have limited support resources and can't spend time and effort on depricated products and tools. It lets everyone move forward to something newer and better.
