*EDIT: Great guys thanks, just ordered the Seagate 320, for just $5 more then the 250 (free shipping only on the 320 plus a promo code from retailmenot), not bad.

^-only for that model though, doesn't work for others.

Read through the '[H]ard|Forum [H]ard|Drive buying guide' sticky awhile back when first considering it, back when the Hitachi Deskstar was still recommended, it's been replaced by the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 Perpendicular Recording <400gb & Maxtor Diamondmax 10/Maxline III. Anyway, looking for something in this range, just want to feel confident before I buy, leaning towards the Seagate, what do you guys think?

Something quiet, around the 250gb range, around $80. Will be picking up a laptop towards the end of the year too, so I keep batting the idea of an external, even thought about the cheap 'homebrew' external, DIY for cheap, so I can use it with the laptop as well, not sure what to do here, hoping for insight. I'll want to be able to move things around on-off the laptop pretty easy, just not sure if I should bother with something now that will work for both later, really not sure how long I want to be keeping the desktop either.

Already have a WD 80GB, keep that for the OS partition, backups, things of this nature, the 250 music, film.

/Thanks.

The Seagate 7200.10s are nice. The 320 is right about in your price range. There's nothing wrong with the Maxtors except that Seagate bought Maxtor ;)

Although a few people have complained that their Seagate 7200.10 drives are loud as hell. Probably a bad batch though. Another option is to go with the Western Digital xxxKS drives.

The difference between 250GB and 320GB is about $15-20, I'd say, go with the 320GB drives then. Of course, it is YOUR money and not mine ;) Spend it how you wish :)
