I have vista rc2 64 bit installed and was wondering if the 32bit version would be better for gaming?

Game manufactures write games for X32 OS and X64 processors. I think you will find that you do not have a single program that was written for a X64 OS. I don’t and I have a bunch of them. Stick with the X32 version of Vista and you will be happy.

There are a small handful of games made for x64, but many many programs, you can see a few at http://www.start64.com/
I have windows xp 64 and haven't had a single problem, the fact that it loads faster, works faster, and has a nice x64 icon at bootup makes it worth it. 99 percent of programs that are made for x32 works 100 percent on x64... I heard some people saying a program or two didn't work for them but I download a lot of programs everyday and they all work just fine. Go with 64

"They say 80 percent of the time it works, everytime."
"Its made from real bits of panther, so you know its good."

I just dont see the point of installing a 32-bit operating system when I have a 64-bit chip. I have been running Windows XP x64 for a year and it is rock solid. No issues whatsoever - every game I have installed works great.

The very same could be made for installing XP64, unless you use one of the very few apps specifically written for it. If all a person does is game, there isn't any reason to use XP64.

Why wouldn't you use it? Name a game/program that you know doesn't work with x64

It's windows Vista... not much chance a lot of things will work on it, try it on the 32 bit version and I bet it won't work either

Actually, weren't there performance hits running games on Vista 64 that weren't nearly as bad in the 32-bit one? I might be remembering something incorrectly, but I was thinking that Anand was telling gamers (specifically) to avoid it.

I have 64bit vista rc1 build 5600 installed and when playing Counter-Strike:Source I get lots of strange lines and graphics that do not show up on windows xp (32bit). Using 9685 drivers.

guys, vista isnt even done yet, and game makers havent made patches and theres no video drivers that even completely support vista..... wait a few months after vista comes out and we can ask this question again, we should be comparing xp 32 and xp 64, not vista

That's a known issue with Vista in the first place, same happens with doom 3, GAMES HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THOSE GLITCHES. As a matter of fact I have CS:S on this x64 machine and it performed EXACTLY the same on stress test as it did before on the 32 bit version before I formatted

There have been a number of threads discussing lower performance, game crashes, and flat out missing drivers for some hardware for XP64. You have to remember that just because you CAN do something, doesn't mean you SHOULD. Running XP64 may increase your e-wang size, but if there's no reason to do so, why deal with some of the hassles? There actually was a thread listing games that didn't run or didn't run very well...but that was quite some time ago. XP64 was a proof of concept product....nothing more. Vista will be the first OS where 64 bit is ready for the masses.*
*In theory, since it's not final yet, anything can happen.
