I am trying to fix a friend's Dell computer. It can no longer connect to the Internet, via both wireless and Ethernet. The Linksys wireless card lights up, so it is receiving power. It just cannot actually connect to any access points. Also the Ethernet shows as connected when I plug it in, but again, it cannot connect to the 'net. I tried cleaning up spyware, that didn't fix it. I also tried to repair the wireless connection, but that failed.

Any ideas? This is Windows XP (not sure of the Service Pack). Thanks a lot!

(not sure of the Service Pack)
Right-click on My Computer-->Properties-->(it should say towards the top).

Anyway, I'm not sure what could be causing it. The card could be faulty, or there could be something wrong with the modem or wireless transmitter (connected but not sending/receiving packets).

Have you gone into Device Manager and checked it out?

I'm starting to think it's your internet connection.

Our Internet connection is fine, as I am on it right now with my Mac. Even if the wireless card is faulty, the Ethernet still does not work. Remember: it shows as 'Connected' when I plug in the Ethernet cord. I just can't actually connect to the Internet.

are you getting an address from the router/access point?

try going into your router settings and releasing then renewing the IP.

make sure that the ethernet driver is updated. this could explain why it wont work with a wired connection.

to explain not getting a wireless signal, maybe the router has a mac filter.

you can also try restarting the network adapter in your friends laptop.

start>run>ipconfig /release>ipconfig /renew
