View Full Version : Best gaming mouse??

Requirements are as follows:

- Precision (obviously!)
- More than 2 buttons (I want 'reload', 'zoom in/out', and perhaps 'duck' all activated on the mouse-end). Strafe, forward/back, and other options can remain on the keyboard)
- scroll button (comfortable and durable) -- used for switching between weapons, and sometimes 'jump', depending on the game).

I've been reading up on the Logitech G series. They seem nice, but I can't say I'm fond of spending almost as much on a mouse as I would on a dual-core CPU. :P

I also did some reading on Saitek... ...looks good, but I haven't spoken with anyone who has actually used one beyond the reviewer community.

What do you all use? I'm interested in comfort as well, especially during long FPS gaming sessions.

Thanks in advance.

i am using the black version of this mouse (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16826123020). cost me $25 back in February this year. works great and haven't had any problem so far.

I was wanting similar functionality out of a mouse to further my WoW experience. I ended up looking at several setups but decided a mouse in my right hand and a Nostromo (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=6184764&st=n52&type=product&id=1067389784805) in my left hand was a better fit. You should really consider this speed pad for all game play. All of the button can be programmed to do as you wish...

Hmm.. this is kind of a draw between two brands of mice.

The Razer Mice (http://www.razerzone.com/Products/Gaming-Mice/Razer-Copperhead-Gaming-Mouse/) and the Logitech Mice (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/categories/US/EN,crid=2133,categoryid=412) .

Which is better? Depends on your preferences really. The Razer Mice are EXTREMELY light, which some people feel is better for their precision. The Razer Mice also have a ton of buttons, which is nice for some people, but for me it gets in the way. I'm always accidentally pushing buttons on the razer mouse. I also have big hands, and the razer mouse is quite small, so its difficult to use.

The Logitech mice are probably more popular. The G5 Logitech has adjustable weight (via a weight cartridge and individual weights in a small canister), so you can make it really light, or really heavy. It is also larger then the Razer mice, which is better for people with bigger hands. It doesn't have nearly as many buttons, only a single extra button (which you said you definitely need a lot of buttons, so these mice might not be good for you).

Both of them are Laser, both of them have on the fly DPI adjustment..

Its really what you feel more comfortable with. I'd recommend going into a store and checking them out. Chances are you have to find a really geeky/gaming type store to find a razer mouse, but the logitechs you can find at any best buy, circuit city, etc..

MX518 is a GREAT mouse, i love mine, have had it for probably 2 years(?) and have fallen in love with it.
Before that I used an Explorer 3.0, I heard they were going to be re-released in the near future

Rather its looks like its out now (http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/gaming/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=087) as posted above.
I haven't gotten to try out this now one, but if its just like the old ones it should be sexxy as all hell, I loved my 3.0 I had to switch because I wore the old girl out after like 3 years...

Best bet is go to Best Buy and feel both and see which you like best, they both have 2 thumb buttons, the MX518 has two buttons for adjusting sensitivity on the fly, that can be a nice benefit.

Simply, accurate, and fits my big meaty hand well.

The new feet are awesome, no more need for fragtape.

When I bought my Pentium D 805 it was only around $100 and that was before core2.... I would not by shocked to see it fro around that price now.

Froogle shows them about $95, which isn't that much more than ~$75 G7. I'd say 'almost' was warranted. You might be able to pick up an 805 cheaper in the fs/ft.

Not to ad gas to anyones flame, but the G5 has been on sale for $25-$30 before if I recall correctly. I believe it was Amazon that was doing some kinda blowout on them.. ?

Yep, the G5's do go on sale.

I got a MX518 corded mouse for 28 shipped and taxed in Canada :P NCIX ftw.

I've used a Razer Copperhead and Krait, and they'er NOTHING compaired to the MX518!

Yea, I really dont like the Razer mice. I can't stand how light they are.. I have done a lot of grunt work in my time, and I'm 6'5, so I have huge, muscular hands, and I really have trouble with the Razer mice. I use every one of the heaviest weights in my G5, and I love it. Its perfect.

I just took delivery of a G5. I have a Razer Diamondback but I need a bigger mouse, plus it didn't always boot up (Razer and Asus don't seem to mix). I'll let you know the diferences after I use the G5 a day or two.

I have a MX518, and its fairly good.. I think I'm going to step up to a G5 soon though. I just can't stand wireless mice for gaming because I mostly play q3 which requires almost zero lag from the time you move your mouse if you want to rail or trickjump properly.

The G5 is a 518 in shape right? But the G5 doesnt have the really weird paint job, and its laser, has adjustable DPI and weight, and all the other features where the 518 doesnt have any extra features and is optical right?

haha... you've convinced me. I'm definitely going to check out the 518 and G5. If the 518 is selling for anywhere near $30, I'll grab it over the G5.

the one thing i dont like about the g5 is they removed the foward button by your thumb. i really like the 518s two thumb buttons better than the single button on the g5.

Copperhead user here, though I'm firmly in the "try before you buy" camp. The fingerstyle Razer works better for me than the full-palm Logitechs. They make my hand cramp up after a while.

The Copperhead with Exactmat is just so damned smooth though. Bad thing about the Copperhead - plenty of buttons, but the opposite side buttons (ones closest to ring and pinkie) are useless.

When you have long fingers like I do, both the Razer and Logitech are finger mice. :p

I prefer the feel of my MX500(same shape as G5) to the feel of my Copperhead.

I have played around with a G5 more than once, a good friend of mine has it and i used it at his house,
but i still overcome the greatness of the MX518 due to the two buttons....

two is better than one....

Has anyone gotten to use the new MS Explorer 3.0? I really want to know if they kept the old feel or if they screwed it up

1) It's a laser mouse (accurate)
2) wireless
3) 8 buttons (not including up/down scroll) plus 2 more if you include the side-scroll of the mouse wheel as well (easily configurable to keystrokes)
4) Charge lasts for SEVERAL days without putting it on the stand

This is what I have - very happy with it, but admittedly, I don't dabble in high-end periphs too much. We had a G5 in the office that was pretty cool, but the MX1000 is a large mouse that is much more comfortable for me (big hands ;) ).

Seconded. I LOVE this mouse. It has the right weight and size for me, and I love that it's wireless and doesn't lag. The buttons are also in the right position, and are reachable without being easily clicked by accident.

My story and i'm sticking to it.

I had an intelimouse Explorer 3.0; best.mouse.ever.

Then it died after ~5 years of service; buttons not always working and mouse randomly stopped being seen by windows.

So i bought an MX510; best.mouse.ever.
I loved it. Red; beautiful paint job, and worked amazingly better than my explorer did; i was amazed and in love.

Then out came the Razer Plasma LE. I had the Saitek gaming keyboard; and my entire rig was blue led/black, so I had to give it a shot just as it matched my setup perfectly.

best.mouse.ever.

I sold my mx510 begrudginly to my roomate.

8 months down the line my Plasma LE (same as copper head just better looking) left click stopped working correctly (uncountable hours of FPS in it, but still should have lasted longer) so i picked up a G5 from best buy to hold me over (in middle of CAL season, needed something NOW type of thing)

G5 is a good mouse; but noticeably not as precise as my Razer Plasma LE was on my fUnc pad.

razer FTW; but durability issues in my experience. and the mx1000 is a horrible mouse for anythign but web browsing; i tried my roomates when my Plasma LE died; and it lagged horribly in comparison. G5 doesnt have the same lag but its just not as responsive or acurate as my razer was. But them are the breaks...

I will comment on the G7.

I have a MX518 on my desktop & the G7 for my laptop.
The major differences are:
~Laser/Optical
~One side button/Two side buttons
~Placement of the scroll up/down button

After playing with both, in video games & just general application usage.
The MX has a better more accurate feel to, while the G7 I enjoy using more for general browsing & work. The MX feels like a more solid gaming mouse.

I will say this, the difference in gaming is very little to almost none, I mainly pick the MX over the G7 because I have been using longer mostly. While on the other hand the G7 grows more on me each day, so over time the G7 might take over.

Also, the G7 is heavy, and lacks the weight controls like the G5, but that is due to it being wireless & not having the room. The weight bothered me at first, but now the MX feels to light, so the G7 I can say is definitely growing on me more and more.

Ive only had my MX1000 a few hours and Ive only played with it shorly and I love it. I have played a few minutes of Lost Coast and I didnt notice in lag. But Im not the most competitive gamer. My other mouse was a MX310. And for 60 bucks (At BB) I wasnt going to pass it up.

I vote for the Razer Diamondback. Even with the cursor speed set the same, I actually notice that my DB is more responsive (lower response time) than the standard Logitech optical mice on my mom's computer. People have trouble using my computer though, even with the sensitivity turned way down. It's kinda entertaining to watch :D

Logitech G5 is superb; not so great for internet surfing IMO, though. Adjustable weight set is awesome, tracking is perfect.

Logitech MX518 / MX510 tie for second place in my book, as well.

I've owned several mice as well.. I loved the MX1000 and thought the G7 pretty good.. Inherrently, I am not a huge fan of wireless but I will give props where props are due. I'd like to dip into the well of knowledge that is this thread. I've got medium to large sized hands. I've tried the G5 and MX518, but I'm just not a fan of the "whole hand" mice. I'm more used to lower slung mice primarily controlled by the fingers.
My current Logitech MX100 is relatively close in shape to the Copperhead, and I've also used the ProSolutions version of it. Input is still appreciated, as I haven't made up my mind. To summarize: Big and lumpy = No. Finger control = Yes.

$25!!!!

I saw one other dude mention it above, which is hilarious, because I read his post literally 10 mins after ordering this mouse from TigerDirect. The feel looks awesome, and the button placement is perfect.

I can't comment in terms of weight until I receive it and have an opportunity to play some games.

Anyway, thanks to all who contributed. I'm a big fan of underdogs, and when I notice companies offering features comparable to the tier-one manufacturers at a fraction of the price, I tend to jump all over it. :)
