You might want to try out the "head fi" forum. Just search for it on googly.
They'll know for sure whats the best.

Yes because everyone here is stupid and knows nothing we have the computer audio section just as a way to send people to head fi.
Seriously though head fi is great but so many times when a question is asked people just pop in and say "go to head fi" gets annoying...
Senn HD595s and the zalman clip on mic is a good duo. 595's sound great and the mic is detachable for when you dont want to use one.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16836501002I 2nd that. I have the Zalman mic with the HD555's (less bass and less expensive than the HD595's) and it's a great combo.

but these are both open heaphones, the sound leaks quite a bit, i was thinking of the hd595's but i wont really be able to use em at a lan coz of the noise leakage or would i?
thanks

thanksThe "noise leakage" that you speak of isn't a problem. It actually makes it sound better and makes it easier to talk to other people while having them on. That way you can hear your friend scream next to you if he pwns your other friend... right... lol

Do the DT770s sound bad without an amp or just not near as great as they can potentially sound? I plan to get these within the next couple of months but am not really wanting to get an amp. (purely for gaming)
I know the AudioTechincas (sp) were highly recommended but I like the look of the DT770s better heh.
i have teh zalman mic and the 595's, but i don't recommend them for a lan setting.
closed phones are what you're looking for.
i'd recommedn the beyerdynamic dt770's or the audio-technica ath700's or 900's.
those are usually what most gamers are recommended.

yeh i realise that the sound is better on open ear headphones but im sure not everyone wants to hear the game through me! i'll have a look at the dt770 :)
Try the senheiser 280pro for sound canceling, closed earphones.

If you want to communicate with people at the lan (NO WAIZ!) open cans are a must. Even if not, everyone will have or should have headphones there, so a little sound leakage from your cans isn't going to bother them I wouldn't think. But yeah, for closed, it's all about the dt770s. I own a pair, and I love em.

Get the Sony MDR-V6’s or the MDR-7506’s, they are the same but one is the pro model. They are 63ohms closed headphones. They have great lows and revealing highs which make them ideal for use in games. They are also some of the most reliable headphones I’ve ever had. I have a friend who has had his pair for 20 years, no shit.
The Beyer DT770’s are great headphones but have a more plastic-ish feel than the sony’s and tend to get beat-up a lot more going to LANs; The huge pads are fairly fragile also. I think they are better for music but mine are already two years old and are almost falling apart from LAN use :( If you go this route get the 80ohm or 32ohm models unless you plan to get an amp.
Don’t get the Sennheiser 280’s unless you just listen to classical, etc. It is one of the most boring headphones for rock I’ve ever heard.

hey is there alot of diffence between open and closed headphones? i like the dt770's but i will go with open ones (maybe hd595? or which beyer?) if you think they are far more superiour.
thanks

Open headphones (cans) sound like you took your stereo with you whereever you are at.
Closed cans have a totally different sound and block most outside noises.
I should mention that sound leaking out into the room is not an issue because they're not speakers, they're still headphones.

i just ordered a Westinghouse 37" so i wont be going to many LAN's in the very near future so i think i may go open to enhance the theatrical feel when im playing on my big screen. So whats a good set of open for around 400, more if need be. with no amp.
thanks

after an amp it would be quite expensive, would it not? i'd like to have no amp, so that means maybe a 80ohm version or something?

As a general rule, you hit diminishing returns real fast without an amp past the $100 mark. Low impedance = need current, high impedance = need voltage. Consider a MINT, Pimeta, or whatever the newest budget amp is.

so you think an amp would be a good investment?
are amps commonly found in 5,25 bay sizes?

Most amps are external.
As far as open vs. closed at a LAN, I'd say open might be better for a very small LAN where you are all just talking when you play, etc. At a large LAN the ambient noise level is much too high for open headphones. Like for example, my xeons use two 60mm Delta EHE fans which are not only loud but have a nasty little whine to them, but I use a speed controller to keep them under control. If I have them at full blast I can hear them across my house, but at a large LAN I can keep them full blast and no one even notices because there is so much noise coming from everywhere else. You don't really want to hear all of that while you're trying to listen for footsteps sneaking up behind you or whatever. For voice chat we usually use ventrilo, even on LAN.

well.. headphones are subjective.. what sounds good to you might not sound good to others. If you can't listen to them in person.. you are going to either have to take a "leap of faith" or go by others w/ experience with them tell you. I think the DT770's have a pretty good track record around the forums... as well as the ATH-900's, etc for closed cans. They seem to get recommended all the time. It also depends on what kind of music you listen to. I personally had a set of open air senn HD580's and they sounded great with most music... but not so great with the music "I" listened to. I needed more bass impact which the 770's delivered better than the other cans in the same price range.

i think open headphones only really excel in studio work where the is no noise from outside, correct me if im wrong though. so i may end up getting the dt770's 80ohm version, i wanted something that is great for gaming aswell as listing to mp3 and watching movies.
