I've been looking for a computer, and I'm not good enough to build one myself yet (Rather not confident enough.) too, so I am probably going to buy a computer.

In Canada, there's not much choice, so it's really annoying. So recently, I heard about Velocity Micro. And they sound great, but buying across the border from a company can be harrowing. So I was wondering, if I buy from them, do I pay tariffs, do I pay tax, any special steps since I'm up north.

However, if you could think of any other Canadian computer builders that do the same as VM, that would be greatly appricated.

Srry if this is not the correct place for such a question.

Well I just bought a computer from VM, and I'm from Manitoba. It cost me 1400 Canadian (for a nice system too) and it shipped on friday. Its on time to arrive in Winnipeg on Friday, so it's only a week, that's pretty good.

Other companies for Canada I can think of are Dell, MDG Computers, Best Buy etc.

In terms of custom built a lot of good companies (like CyberPower) don't ship here so I dunno.

When going across the border (Package), did you get an extra surcharge by Customs? How about taxes? And the all dreaded Shipping fee?

Srry if I seem a little tense. It's just exciting to upgrade from the first Pentium 4s and 256 of ram :D

On the VM site I picked standard (70 bucks) shipping.

In terms of Duty or whatnot, i havn't been charged anything, yet.

As far as I know, Canada Customs has the right to charge me duty (although it would be too much) but on something like this, they usually won't.

But i won't find out 100% till Friday, in which I'll let you know.

How about taxes? GST and PST? Or was it not charged?

I'd like to get a 2000 buck computer, but exchange brings it up to 2200ish, and then taxes make it 2500.

VM only charges you taxes if you are from Virginia (which is where VM is located)

as far as I know i won't be charged any taxes, but slight possibility i could get charged PST, not sure yet

I bought a DVD drive for my xbox a couple years ago, and i didn't get charged anything (but then again that was postal, not UPS or fedex or anything)

and..........

They're charging me 260 bucks to get the comp

they add GST and PST to the 1400 bucks on the computer
about an 60 buck customs fee, and gst on top of that.

i'm pissed off, but i guess i gotta pay it if i wanna see that computer

If you ship anything from the USA to Canada it is best to us USPS. sometimes no gst, and never any brokerage fees.

Sadly, Velocity Micro only uses UPS. At least they don't use Sameday-Right-O-Way. Apple sent my ipod with that company, it came late and I had to go 30 km in afternoon rush hour in Toronto to get it.

UPS is the devil of shipping.

They charge ALOT for what they call "brokerage" ie the paperwork, then tax both the product cost AND the brokerage fee.

They're such bastards.

Even Fedex only charges 40$ tops for brokerage + Gst...

they HAVE to charge that much in order for business to be fair, would anyone buy computers from Canadian companies if they could get them from the United States tax free??

If there's one thing about canada its that you CANT beat the tax, they get you somewhere along the line.

Yeah, my father who uses UPS for business says if you are not an account holder (ie. a regular shipper/receiver) they'll pretty much get you for as much as they can (standard prices), however the have the right to not charge you.

Maybe VM will allow a choice between companies or something. I mean 80 bucks for a bit of paperwork is bullcrap.
