My stupid dell's LCD sreen went, and its got many other problems so it looks like im gonna be in the market for a laptop. it must be something with a warranty, so a pieced together/self built computer wont work, im assuming. now Dell is def out of the question. i dont know too much about computers, but my main requirement is that i get something reliable. i dont want to be having all the stupid problems that i have with my dell. whats like the brand with the best rep? HP, toshiba, Sony, gateway? next most important are the options. i want a powerful computer. nice fat hard drive, fast processing, large memory, nice video and sound cards. i do not want intel either... AMD or something else, but i hate intel with a passion. so what can you guys suggest? TIA :)

We have been extraordinarily impressed with the build quality and stability of Gateway laptops. I'd definitely give them a look.
As far as boutiques go, ABS has a nice line-up. We were also extremely impressed with IBM's ThinkPad - it's a tank, and has the best battery economy we've seen in any mobile solution. They also have awesome keyboards.
If I had to recommend a CPU solution, I'd go with a Core 2 Merom, or if you're on a tighter budget, a T2500 or T2600 Core Duo. I've got no loyalties to Intel, for sure, but you can't deny the performance edge they're giving right now. I would strongly reconsider your anti-Intel thoughts.

I would look at getting a ThinkPad. I love my T60 and would buy another in a heartbeat. Well worth the premium over other brands.

Love my new HP dv6174cl, it comes with the core duo 2 processor, 2GB ddr2 667, 120 5400rpm HD, 256m 7400 Geforce Go, etc for $1100 at costco. Plus you have costco's awesome return policy...win win

My ABS baby has yet to fail me (except when I play DOD:S, then it crashes after two games). The only problem I would consider is battery life. My little bastard (I say that in a loving way) gets about 1 hour and 20 minuets of general use (On power conservation mode, mind you) And less then an hour for gameplay.
Take into consideration that I'm using an MT Turion.
