View Full Version : Camping for the PS3

I just finished reading a certain thread where someone discussed camping for over 2 days to get a PS3. I am planning on doing this but I think 2 days is a little bit ridiculous. I mean, you are going to be sitting there in a non-existant line while the store is open and people are coming and going, what are you going to do make a big sign that says PS3 line starts here? LOL!
Seriously though, from the people who camped for the 360 when should I get there and at which store. I work at target and my employee discount would be applied there but I think they only got 4 360's on launch day... Would I have better chance to get one at Walmart? Would getting there at the time of the stores closing the night before be sufficient, or will there already be a line?

just go to walmart, hand joe stockman a $50, and get one early

Isn't Walmart opened 24 hours? Anyway, I work in the mall, and there is a Gamestop right near us, and I ask them almost everyday about the preorders. But, if I don't get one, then i'm gonna camp outside Circuit City.

Even though I haven't done it lately, I used to be a "camper" in the PS2 days.
I showed up at a 24-hour Wal-Mart at 7:45PM and there was already a line 30 people deep. Sadly enough, when the PS2's came out, they ignored the line the store had created. They just wheeled 'em in and the mob rushed. It's company policy that they don't do lines, so even if they try to make you line-up, don't bother. You're best off being closer to the entrance (where they'll load 'em) than at the front of any line. Note that this has held true with their crazy black friday $300 laptops, too. They made people line up for some stupid reason, yet when the items are released, it's just a mad rush to the front of the store.
If you *REALLY* must have a PS3 and want the thrill of camping (I can't blame you, it can be fun), your spot of choice is Sam's Club. Show up at 5AM. They "secretly" open at 7AM for business customers, but they don't actually care if you're a non-business client. At least when I used to do it they never turned down my "personal" card. Just show up dressed nice and walk right in at 7AM. They'll likely get in at least a half dozen.

If EBGames does a midnight launch for the Wii, what time should I go to wait in front of the store?

Crikie!
Who camps anymore anyways.
Sure it shows you are devoted fan but what does it matter when you prepay your system at gamestop, then show up at the midnight release, and whammo you walk away.
I never understood those campers that stuck around for X number of days just to claim a piece of hardware. I mean I'm a fanatic of video games too (been playing them since 5), but why the hell do you absoloutley have to sit outside for days.
Plus that price really scares me. I remember shelling out 400+ dollars for a Sega Saturn when it came out and even that was like WTF.
Now there's news of the PS3's games being something like 70-80 bucks then I say F-that!
Things have changed since then. That sort of policy would incur undoubtable lawsuits so they changed it.
With the 360, they had everyone get in line. First-come, first-serve, one per person.
I had a friend in lay-away call me when the line was about ten less than the total number of Premium systems they had. Went in there at 6PM and left around 1:30AM with a few systems (Had a friend wait).

OMG you're so cool. You'd be surprised at how many of us "geeks" on the [M] can have that any night.

Go to BestBuy, or WalMart. Stay the hell away from the boutiques. I went to BestBuy at 11 PM and I was #24 in line out of around 56 consoles they had. I think anyone who got there after 2 or 3am was SOL.
If I were you I would have a few places in mind, perhaps try to get in line at Walmart around 7 or 8, if it doesn't look like your gonna get one head to a place that opens in the morning.

I'm glad they did change the line thing. I remember the guy who was first in line for the PS2 not getting one at all. I felt bad for the guy as he claimed to have gotten there at 4PM.
When they did those $300 HP laptops for black friday last year the same thing happened. They had a big line that went around the store and led into the electronics dept. The people at the front got a whole lot of nothing, while the people in the middle (that were near the entrance) got as many as they could grab and hang on to.
For me, recently I've just stuck to Wal-Mart online. It's a guaranteed purchase. If they "pre-sell" it to you, they GUARANTEE it'll ship on release day if not earlier. My 360 actually shipped on the Saturday before the release. Had I spent the $'s for next day - it should've been there on Monday. When they ran out of pre-sell alotment online, they stopped the sales that instant. I'm not getting a PS3 (at least not until I see Tekken 6 release info), so I haven't looked...but they might do the same thing for the PS3, yes?

I'm not camping no 2 days.... probably at noon Nov 16th the earliest.
There's no Wal-Mart round here, though (NYC), so I'll be standing outside of the Best Buy like a jerk.
Woot!

Unless they changed their policy it doesn't matter they are all going to be preorder bundles.
*Disclaimer: My information could be wrong since it has been a while since I last experienced a launch at EB.

I remember Best Buy doing an online pre-order for x number of 360's for people with the rewards card. I wonder if they will do the same this time.
BTW I missed out on that pre order because I did not check my e-mail untill 2 days after they sent it, I clicked on the link and it said they were all sold out :(

I want to camp my local Best Buy starting the afternoon of November 16th but I will be alone.
Will people hold my place for me when I need to use the bathroom? They better.
Also is it only one per customer? Cause I need to buy two premium systems.

From my exp., people will hold the place for you just make "line buddies". Hell, for the 360 I was 2nd in line and I had free reign.. drove 30 miles to my house and back to give the kid a bath and tuck him into bed.
just go to walmart, hand joe stockman a $50, and get one early
Management keeps a close eye on this now. Joe Stockman would get caught and fired because the corporation will get fined if they break the street date and it ends up on eBay.
A week ahead of the Xbox 360 launch, I knew exactly how many units they had. I kept asking different people as we came closer to launch and they all had the exact same answer. The best "inside info" I got that was useful was a friend calling me and updating me on how many people were in line (So I could wait as long as I could at home before going and sitting at Wal-Mart).

I guarantee you it will be one per customer if there are more people waiting than systems available. People at the X360 launch got unruly just because they didn't get there in time for the one-per-customer policy...imagine if they'd seen people walking out with two or three of their own. There would've been a riot.

Besides, people who are or at least would want to buy multiple systems aren't buying accessories. The one per customer rule works better for the retailer too.

uh, unless there's a shortage (which all signs point to this being real) then you'll end up waiting for weeks/months like people were for their 360 orders.

An internet tough guy! Wow...I've never seen one of those.
...joking aside, it's kind of pathetic that you have to come onto an internet forum and talk about your perceived "coolness" and "game". I'm 21, and no, I'm not married. I do prefer the company of one woman, though; it has it's advantages (A lack of AIDS/Herpes is the big one). [H] is just one of my hobbies; sportbikes and racing are others.

All of you knock it off.
If you can't post by the rules, then don't post, period.
If you can't act like adults, then we'll be happy to treat you like children and start handing out vacations.
