View Full Version : Selling PS3's On Ebay?

When the Xbox 360 came out, I was really disappointed I didn't get one because I could have sold it on Ebay for tons of money. And the PS3 is rumored to have only 400,000 units coming out in the US on launch, which is like 1/3 of what Xbox did. My mom okay'd me camping out at Best Buy for a couple days before the launch so that I could buy a few, but do you think I could sell them on Ebay for a lot more? And my friend that works there said that they don't have a reservation policy, it's first come first serve, but it's probably going to be a 1 per person deal, so I'll have a couple friends with me to buy the other two.

if you take how the ps2 sold on Ebay as any indication, I bet you could make a decent amount of money off of them. But also since there are so few dont expect to even get any yourself, maybe pre-order them so you are for sure going to get some.

Do you know of anyone that is taking pre-orders of them?

FYE was. dunno anymore though. No individual store knows how many they're getting yet (I think) but in all likelihood it'll be first come first serve.

Just another thought, but how about only buying one for yourself and letting others buy one too, instead of buying a few and trying to capitalize on the almighty buck. Just my two cents anyway :D

In all likelyhood, I'm going to be freezing my ass off for 2 1/2 days while I wait for it to launch. The early bird gets the worm, so if you want to join me, then be my guest. I'm sorry for offending you by wanting to make money. It's a supply and demand market, and I just want to be a supplier.

gamestop and ebgames will not be taking pre orders. I think it's safe to assume that this launch will be first come first serve. Mass camping!

Unless you have a friend on the inside :D
I've already got a couple lined up. I figure with the $ I make off those sorry pieces of junk I'll be able to get Wii's for my closest friends and family :)

2.5 days seems kinda ridiculous... you can only buy 1 per person and think about having to get food, go to the bathroom etc. Unless you can convince at least 3 other people to sit out with you (1 minimum so one of you can leave) I'd say theres no way you are going to last 2.5 days. Also, you should think of all the fees you will accumulate. Think of the ebay, paypal, shipping fees plus the amount of food you will have to buy to camp out that long. I doubt you will sell one for much over 1200, and say you do charge for shipping your fees will still be around 150$ after thinking of tax and everything else. That would be a net profit of 450$. Now consider you are sitting there for 60 hours (2.5 days) and you are only making $7.50 an hour... I too plan to camp out but I would not consider 2.5 days worth it and I doubt you'll have to camp out for that long to get one. Just my 2 cents

The guy at the EB/Gamestop up the street from me said something like that today. He was saying with so few on the first shipment it would be near impossible to get one.

The two FYEs around here aren't taking pre-orders anymore and it sounded like they took too many pre-orders. EBGames/Gamestop aren't taking any and are saying they aren't getting more than 2 or 3. I have yet to find a place that is taking preorders and that I would place a preorder at (I didn't trust FYE since it sounded like they were handing out "preorders")
On topic: If you want to camp out for one, there's definently a profit to be made. I camped out for a short while to get a 360 but I live in a rather small community so the line/wait wasn't bad at all. No way the wait will be 2.5 days though. In most places it will probably be around 12-14 hours if it follows how the 360 launch went. Ebay and paypal do take a big chunk out like Jared mentioned. I think with ebay, paypal and shipping it was a little over $70 out of my pocket when I sold my 360.

Of course its a supply and demand market and there will be those people out there willing to pay an exuberant amount for said PS3 and really if you want to freeze your butt off for 2.5 days you probably deserve to make some money for your efforts. However, with an estimated 400,000 units available for launch man I don't know that your chances are going to be that good unless you convince your buddies to camp out with you like you said. Anywho you said you're also looking to buy a camcorder, surely you can find a nice one for the price of a few PS3's :p

I already have 1 recruit to camp out with me, and I'll try to find another and pay them each like $100 for their efforts.

PS2's went for over $1000
I'd figure PS3 would go for $1500+

I thought the 360 numbers were more like 300,000. Cause I read an article about how Wii is releasing 1 million consoles at launch in the US, which is way more then the 360 was. The article also talked about the 400,000 PS3 consoles, and it was a larger number then the 360. Microsoft didnt send out 1,200,000 units on launch. No where near that many.

I Wikipedia'd it; yes, "wikipedia" is now a verb. I was misinformed, there were 326,000 360's sold in november. Any estimates on what I might make off each console?

First off let me nip a couple of things in the bud right off.
The OP has every right to sell a console, period. You can fully disagree with the method, but this isn't a debate of it, so do me a favor and don't crap the thread.
Second, it is very possible that EB/GS may not being doing preorders for two reasons:
1) Supply issues
2) To avoid the fiasco that happened with the 360 launch.
The last I heard on the subject was that if they had enough supply to accomodate preorders, they would take them.
I believe there was supposed to have been a managers meeting this past weekend or two where they were going to discuss this issue, and come to a conclusion.

Don't forget the PS2 launch.
On topic. Hey OP if you are willing to camp out a few days then best of luck to you. I guess if you manage to somehow get like 5 of them and make a few grand then it would be worth it. I just don't see the point. One I think you would be able to pull it off camping out just one night. I also just don't see it being worth it unless you manage to get a bunch.

No offence man, but I'd never screw my friends over like that, if they're staying out all night with me they're keeping there own console and doing as they wish with it. At Best Buy, you had to have a credit card in your name or cash to purchase your 1 unit. Meaning, you couldn't buy multiple units with your card. The two people with you would either need to have the cash or have their own credit/debit card in their name that matches their drivers license. Not sure about other stores, but that's how best buy did it.

agreed, I really doubt you could find ANYONE that gullible to be willing to sit outside for 2.5 days and then you take all the profit from them
I think youll soon realize you may be able to find people to camp out with you, but when they buy their system it is theirs, and I highly doubt any of them would sell it to you for 600 so you can make a huge profit off of them.

A couple posts back, someone called me the OP. What does that mean? Anyway, I'm going to be giving them the money to buy the PS3's, they aren't buying their own. And my friends NEED me for this. They don't have the money to buy their own, so it's either take it or leave it.

Then maybe you need to get a job and move out of your house. Start your own business. I had a nice laugh when I saw that you had to ask your mom permission to camp outside of Best Buy.
People like you are only in this world thinking of one person, yourself. How about you put yourself in a father's shoes. This father wants to get his sickly child a PS3 to make them happy. Nah, he can't because some little nerd camped out in front of Best Buy and bought multiple systems just to benefit his self only.
I look down on people like you and if you continue to live your life this way, so will everyone else in the world. Scumbag.

You know, I actually applaud the guy for wanting to make money out of the people with more money than sense. A lot of businesses are run that way so why can't he make a little money that way too?
Also, you don't know how old the guy is... given he's asking his mother for permission I'm guessing pretty young. Sounds to me like he's using the money he has to make more. That's pretty smart and commendable in my eyes... especially for someone young.

I'm guessing he is one of the bitter people who couldn't get a hold of an xbox 360 when he wanted to :p
In any case, there's nothing wrong for selling something for greater than you paid for it... this is how people make money in the real world.

your friends NEED you so that they can sit outside in the freezing cold for 2.5 days making a little over $1.50 an hour? Give me a break dude, if any of your friends have an IQ over 75 they will realize what a joke this is.

If someone is willing to camp outside for 2.5 days for the sake of what, $500, maybe $750 more power to them.
Hardly seems worth it to me.

Making at least $1000 to $1500 in 2 days seems worth it if you have the time. Just take a laptop with a couple batteries and someone to go with you. Of course it is warm here, so it isn't too big of a deal.
Of course, who knows, maybe the the consumer will wisen up and realize that the PS3 isn't worth the premium. Yeah right.

I am going to laugh my friggin' ass off when the PS3 launches and the only people who purchase it at launch are the ones who planned on selling it for a profit on ebay...the sight of a few thousand PS3s sitting on ebay for $1000 and not selling will definitely bring a smile to my face THIS holiday season.

All I have to say is that I am glad no one will be taking preorders this time in order to make it harder for people to do this.
Second, sure maybe 1/20 PS2 were sold for over $1000 on Ebay but the vast majority of people did NOT get anything near $1000. $600 is more like what the average selling price was.

PS3 systems will easily sell for $1200 and maybe more on Ebay.
The first 2-3 days of the launch X360 premium systems were over $1000.
