i have a ultra 160 PCI card now and 2 ultra160 HDD's, if i run a ultra320 drive on this setup, will it default to the slower transfer rate of the 160 drives, i know i will never see 320 speeds, but the drive i am looking at goes up to about 89Mbsec, where as my current drives are somewhat slower.

confused yet, not sure if i have worded this right.

The new Ultra 320 drive will operate at Ultra 160 speeds while connected to an Ultra 160 SCSI controller.

Also, if you were to buy an Ultra320 controller and put all the drives on it, the slower 160 MB/s drives would cause the whole scsi bus to run at that speed. You could buy a 320 controller and put just the one drive on it, if it's really that much of a concern.

an update and a few questions.

i got my maxtor 147GB ultra320 10,000rpm drive installed tonite, i did a few quick tests to see how it benches compared to my 34GB ultra160 10,000rpm ultra160 drive and my old IBM ATA100 gpx60 40GB drive.

i know i will not hit max 320 speeds running on my adaptec 29160N PCI adapter card, but do these speeds look okay for what i have so far ?

i still need to change the scsi id jumper on the new drive from #3 to #2, i forgot about the first drive being #0 :D

also if i use norton ghost to image my current 34GB scsi drive, which is C-drive now, to the new drive, is there anything i have to do to make the old 34GB drive back into storage, i mean will i have to mess with any boot.ini settings or something, i want the new drive to become C-drive after i am done ?

have everything setup now the way i want it, just had to use regdedit to change the drive letters and change the boot order in the BIOS.
