Like many office users, I carry around a laptop (Thinkpad X40) and use it at both the office in a docking station, and at home as a laptop. I love the small form factor, but I'm crippled by its limited processor speed, unbelievably slow HD performance and limited video capabilities, not to mention limited connectivity.
What I'd love to do instead is carry around a SATA enclosure that I could simply plug in to both an office and home PC. The drive would be bootable on both, and due to very similar or exactly the same hardware configurations all the drivers would be the same. This way I could always have my data with me, and i can take advantage of the speed and flexibility that PCs could offer.
So a few questions:
1. Would Windows XP and upcoming Vista think both PCs are different, and therefore the above scenario wouldn't work with required activation?
2. Are there any SATA cards out there which allow a front facing port?
3. Am I just smoking something here, or does this idea have merit?
Any help/advice would be appreciated!
