I am honestly unsure of where to put this, so why not here? I'm sure it's a software thing rather than hardware thing.

Why is it that the longer one leaves a computer on standby/hibernate, the longer it takes to thaw?

For example, if leave this laptop (specs unnecessary, I presume) on Standby for 3 hours, it will turn on within 10-15 seconds, yet if I leave it on Standby overnight, or for 2-3 days, it will take around 3-10 minutes to get out of Standby...

Why? Anyone know the mechanisms behind it? I really hate turning off my computer when I have so many applications open...

The power scheme is probably set to different level of standby, check "Power Options" in control panel. "Normal" standby is usually much faster to restore, but suspend to drive (aka hybernation) takes longer because it needs to restore the content of RAM from harddrive.

This is an over simplified explanation, google it for more info.
