Something I did or had done to my Win2k SP4 installation on 8/13/2006 has been causing constant errors. I can pinpoint the day, because that is when the particular error message started popping up in my Event Log.
(I'm running a virus scan as I type this, but I seriously doubt that is the problem)
The problem:
Application popup: explorer.exe - Application Error : The instruction at "0x[stuff]" referenced memory at "0x[stuff]". The memory could not be "read".1. A few times, "Explorer.EXE" or "Windows Explorer: explorer.exe" has shown up
2. The memory address [stuff] changes between several values
3. Sometimes the error message says 'The memory could not be "written"'
This error has happened without any interaction on my part (on windows startup) and has happened when I try to delete or open random folders on my C drive.
I thought the issue was limited to explorer.exe, but I tried deleting one of those troublesome folders from the command prompt and I got "The supplied user buffer is not valid for the requested operation." or cmd.exe crashed & popped up an error message. Trying to open the folder from the command line also resulted in a crash.
Hmm... I just tried having my virus scanner check out the same folder in my temp internet folder... and the scanner crashed.
I've been using my Temporary Internet Files folder as a playpen to recreate the error and I noticed that after browsing and closing internet explorer windows, I was able to delete one of the previously troublesome folders.
About the only thing I did recently was to run Windows Update & install the recent patches.
Any thoughts?
