This happens half of the time and has been happening for 2 days now. I delete 5 GBs or so a day or stuff normally without a problem. This is happening on both drives on the computer. I did not install anything since it started doing this. I keep losing more and more space. I've had this windows xp pro installation for a year now and I have never experienced a single problem.

Check for viruses.

Check your paging file (right click on My Computer->Properties->Advanced->Performance->Advanced->Change). See if your page file is increasing to fill up the now empty space.

Also, do a Scandisk (right click on drive->Properties->Tools) and make sure that your partition table isn't reporting the size incorrectly.

Obviously, make sure that you are emptying your Recycle Bin.

I have the paging file set to 1000 MB. The recycling bin is empty. I am running scandisk now. I am also sending important files to my other computer to burn to a DVD. If I have to, I'll format. I update norton 2005 once a week and scan almost all of the files that come in.

It is doing it on both hard drives, so I don't think it is hardware related.

If scandisk doesn't find anything, I personally would reformat, as I suspect a virus. Run netstat from a command prompt and see if you find any connections to wierd IPs or on an FTP port (21), IRC port (6660 - 6669) or SSH port (22), or any other crazy port for that matter.

The only ports I have forwarded are 6112, 6881, 6882 on my linksys router. I am doing a full system scan now though.

I ran the scandisk and it just said it was completed but gave not results.

Connected to some http. Rest are localhost:1487, 1491, 1038, 2886, 2885. Also connected to my networked computer.

I checked my system restore history and found that the only thing I installed was the windows security patch for some virus that made national news. I got it right off of the MS website.

Could system restore or norton be causing this?

Disabling system restore only brough back 1.5 GBs on drive C.
