View Full Version : Overclocking and Audio (PCI) "artifacts"/errors?

Alright, I thought this would be the best place to voice this issue, as it appears to be due to my OC, but if I'm wrong please move it to the appropriate forum.

Until tonight, I was running at a 270 FSB, and everything worked perfectly. I, being on the ever-continuous quest for more power/speed/performance (who isn't? :p), decided to increase my OC a little more, to a 275 FSB. The OC seems stable (I completed 1, 2 and 4 million digits in SuperPI and played Oblivion for about half an hour), and working well. However, now my PCI audio card (Creative Professional/E-MU DSP 0404) seems to be generating "artifacts", so to say. When playing Oblivion, a random, very loud hum (like a hydro transformer almost) appears randomly. I'm not sure if this is an error in the game, or because my PCI bus is a little too overclocked because of the increase. The sound seems to occur whenever another sound should be playing, but it's really hit and miss, and no errors are generated playing music in Winamp.

I think it's the PCI being too overclocked, but I can't find any options to change that independant of the FSB. Anyone have any ideas/have had something like this happen to them before?

P.S. Yes, I know I could just turn the FSB down again, but who does that? :p I'd rather find out why the high clock is causing this and fix that then lower it again.

Unfortunatly no lock, only an option to set "AGP Frequency", and it's already set at the lowest setting.

Edit: I turned my FSB down again so I can play, but if anyone can offer any other ideas/suggestions, please do. I'm willing to do stuff like flash bioses and such if I need to to get my OCs higher (yes, I am that insane), so don't leave anything out ^.^

If theres no pci lock theres pretty much nothing you can do.

Thanks for the help guys. It turns out in my stupidity that it's an issue between the game and my drivers, and actually has nothing to do with the card. >.< It took me a while to realize it, but it's only one particular sound that turns into the buzzing, but because I was in an environment that was surrounded by it (it's the sound the hellion creatures make, and I was in the oblivion plane >.<), it sounded like it was everywhere.

Again, thanks for the help. Lock please.
