just make sure your master / slave settings are correct and plug it in

If its EIDE, make the new drive a slave, and the old drive a Master. If its SATA, just plug it in. Make sure your BIOS detects it. Format and partition in windows with Disk Manager.

This has been the best advice so far. :)

alright

its a seagate and the only cables i had in my motherboard box were the ide data cable
and i had an unused power cable in my case

i dont see any jumpers layin around.. from takin a quick look at a few of the posts and articles looks like the jumper is a key cable... guess i gotta go pick one up then.

and how should i set them up.
kinda fuzzy of the advantages of particining the drives and all that, i'm kinda looking to store tha majority of my files and porgrams that i 'use inconsistantly either on this new one or my old drive.. thanks

Well, you won't be able to use it at all if you don't partition the drive. You imply that it is an EIDE drive, but you do not say it is. If, in the back of the drive, you see an area to plug it in that looks like this
http://www.mediacenterpc.no/bilder/guider/sata.jpg
Then it is an SATA drive. If your motherboard supports them, then it should have some plugs on it that look like these
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASRock/939SLI32-eSATA2/images/sata.jpg
If it doesn't and it is an SATA HDD, then I would return it and look for an EIDE model. If it isn't, then you should partition the so that it is usable. To do this
1: Click the start button
2: Click on run
3: Type in "compmgmt.msc" sans quotation marks
4: Click on "Disk Management"
5: It should show that you have 2 hard drives. Click on the one that says it is unformatted and select format.
6: Follow the yellow brick wizard.
7: Sit back and relax.
8: Enjoy.

hey thanks for the reply
its NOT a sata, i have that cable however it is no use to me...

so in order to properly plug in this drive then
the drive is
Seagate 250GB EIDE HD 7200/16MB/ATA-100

so i've plugged the EIDE cable into the back of the drive and into the second IDE slot on my mothgerboard, i;ve also grabbed a space power cable.. however i havet seen any jumper cables..
since i have't seen one what are my options now?
do i go and get one or do i not worry about it b/c its not needed.

Appreciate your help.

Jumpers aren't cables. They look like these
http://retrotechnology.com/herbs_stuff/jump_2mm.jpg
Setting the jumper is definitly a requirement. If you don't set the jumper properly (to slave, in this case as you want to use it as a second hard drive) then it won't be usable at all. You should check here (http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/specs/techlib.html) for what the proper jumper setting is. Just enter in your specific model number. They will probably offer a small pdf for your drive or your series of drive.

Aright i found the model number and the pdf file
however i don't understand any of this stuff..

http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/manuals/ata/100389997c.pdf (page 10 is my drive settings) (page 35 is the jumper steeings)
ST3250624A (250 gb)

and i dont think i have any jumpers in my mboard case... i dont see anything that looks similar to that picture.

i may just take this in, cuz i dont have any clue here.

The jumpers are on the back the of HD, look at the picture above. You will see a sticker on the top of the drive that will tell you where to move the jumper for what. You are looking for a configuration that says slave.

Yeah, and it should come with at least 1 jumper or set of jumpers. Usually even without, they work for me though.

i didnt get ANYTHING with my drive.
nothing at all...

if my drive was a SATA drive then i have both the power supply and the sata cable
i only have the EIDE cable and the spare power cable thats already in my box for this edie drive.
i dont have any 8 prong connections.

however my old drive is a WD and there are only a power supply and a sata cable connected to it. *if that matters*

The jumper is already on the drive.
You just need to make sure it is on the right pins. ;)

refer to the picture in post #6, see where it says "jumper".

ooo shit
dammit thats what you mean

i'm pretty sure it's already set up that way.
sorry guys... 1st time trying this.

[edit]
wow that was way easier then i imagined it would be.
alright so in Device Manager it's showing the drive
when im in properties and then volumes, when i populate it, it doesn't say that its initilized or online like my master.
what do i have to do in order to get it up and operational?

Format the drive under disk manager, you will right click on the drive and click format, and it will format the drive for ya and you will be set.

You may want to partition the drive first, in Disk manager, before formatting. Refer to step 3 of Darundal's post.
