View Full Version : Why doesnt Douglite or Drizzt make a RAID0 sticky?

It would solve there reiteration and frustration problems if RAID 0 (not RAID 1 or RAID 5) just RAID 0 were explained with all the truths made plain and clear, b/c RAID0 is always in the haed of enthusiasts as the way to get inceased performance easily

I am not a mod
It is in the ANSWERS (http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=754424) thread -> What RAID can and cannot do (http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=952998)

Like drizzt said, no need to add something that already exsists...

As drizzt81 pointed out, I did make a sticky. No one reads it :( I used to mod this forum. I used to run this forum pretty much single handedly. There were days when I literally had a post in every thread on the first page of the Disk Storage Systems index. All of that went out the window when I tried to explain RAID's limitations and pitfalls in the OEM systems forum. I gave everything for this forum, and held it to a higher standard than any other forum on this board, and I got slapped in the face. There's going to come a time when I'll be unable or unwilling to fight these battles anymore, and quite a few people will suffer because of it.
It's unfortunate. A lot of people waste a lot of money on RAID, and it's not just RAID-0. Many people put blind faith in RAID-1, when using their DVD burner or an external drive will protect their data from many more potential causes of data loss than RAID-1 ever will. Same goes for RAID-5.
It wouldn't matter if we made a sticky that said "RAID sucks, here's why." There would still be people that would believe the garbage out there spewed out by HDD makers about RAID-0 is the greatest way to hot rod your custom built rig. Seagate does that, and so does Hitachi. They sell drives based on HDTach results...even though HDTach does not reflect any real world desktop access patterns. They sell drives for RAID-1 arrays, telling people their data is "safe."
People out there throw down thier hard earned cash on worthless RAID-0 arrays, when upgrades to better video cards, more memory, faster CPUs, or faster/multiple single drives will serve them much better. People gamble priceless family memories and vital documents on RAID-1/5 arrays that are vulnerable to corruption, driver glitches, malicious activity, natural disasters, and accidental user error. Backup to an off-site location eliminates all of these threats to data at a stroke...but so few people do it, because real backups actually require effort.
RAID is "fire and forget." It makes people feel better. However, when you actually stop to look at what is really going on, you realize there is little to no return on investment for RAID in desktop environments.

well i figure if the sticky specifically just talked about RAID then it would clear up alot of posts...just trying to help...oh well

I understand your idea, but the problem is that people don't read the sticky there is.

Hell Doug, that sucks to see that said, but I know it's true. You know your shit, plain and simple. Myself and many many others appreciate all the time you put into this forum.

I dunno. I like this forum, it's a shame to see it u 90% full of
"OMG if I get teh RaptrZ will my PC pwn j00 even more???" and "RAID-0 is leet right? what do you mean its not? but it's twice as fast? SLI Hard drivez lol!"
Some of you guys really know your stuff and I'm learning a lot of stuff to take on board for my next gaming rig and upcoming file server project.
It's the exact same with another forum I frequent, in the nets/comms section 95% of queries are people asking "what ISP should I use" and "How do i get teh warez with azureus?".
I believe Cathar had a good post about it before where the "Net Clue" of a forum would gradually increase over time as knowledgeable members increase in numbers, then start to steeply drop off as the forum became swamped with couldn't care less lazy nubs.

You'd think the thread titled "Sticky: ANSWERS" would be the first place you would look if you had a question, wouldn't you?

You'd think so, but then again clearly not for a lot of people who so lazy that they're going to a forum in order to ask questions so basic that Google is the best option.
Maybe if mods could get a flash program that made a giant neon arrow pointing at the answers sticky for first time forum visitors?

ahhh, mine eyes! but yes, it is good to stick around and listen to all the knowledge that is here on the forum. that is the purpose of forums, for those of us who have little time to search, or even for those who are too lazy to search. both a blessing and a curse. sometimes i just dont know what to search for until someone posts the question around here. ah well, knowledge is good to have, especially when others are willing to destroy their systems to give us the information we all look for.
Doug had a great thread on RAID0 but all the n00bs with synthetic benchmarks in hand crapped all over him for it

Well cheer up, good man. I've seen the light, and thankfully before I spent my money! I fully planned a Raid 0 setup, though I longed for a simple and straightforward second drive as well. Now I'm just going with a second drive for a PS scratchdisk and temporary backup, plus an emergency dual boot to Win XP.
I appreciate your efforts.
