Kind of a weird question, but does anyone know of an external harddrive which can act as a NAS, interfacing through ethernet...but can also be plugged in with USB 2.0 and act as any normal external drive. All I seem to have found is NAS which can have USB devices plugged into it.

i would also like to know this. perhaps a linux-based file server with some type of usb "output" port that would allow other computers to recognize the server's drives as if they were just normal external drives? it has to be possible, just a matter of whether the hardware exists yet.

Well I did find one solution, I think it was the Coolmax 550 or 350 or something like that. It had so-so reviews, but at least it is good to know that there is a possibility out there. I wanted to know because some of the clients my firm services have some old servers which only have USB 1.1, which takes ages. So for those instances when you could configure your drive to act as a NAS through ethernet it would really speed things up for the occasional transfers you need to do which cant go through the net.

We have a GenDisk (some brand purchased at office max) external drive that is NAS and USB.
I'll hook it up via USB to see what happens.
EDIT: it works as a regular USB2.0 drive just fine.
