i have tried now several times to install xp. every single time, it goes through the first part and then reboots. ok, that is fine, no errors. but after it reboots, it goes back and wants to install again! i have:
aspire 500w
amd 3000 venice
asus a8v
elixir 512mb dd400
ati 9600 pro
WD 80gb ata 7200rpm
sony dvd-rom
sony dvd-rw
i had this issue with another computer before, but that was from not having master and slave drives when the 1st drive's jumper was set to master with slave present. this time i tried that and single drive and neither are allowing me to continue with the setup :(

Make sure you change the boot order back to whatever you had before, putting the CD-ROM drive back in third instead of first or second.

XP shouldnt boot even if you have the CD rom set without you pressing a button to initiate it.
unless you got some old old system that force boots to the cd room so for sure try that and let us know.
After the reboot, pop the cd drive out. As soon as it boots after that and "begins install" then put it back in.

solution:
had to change the hard drive boot order on my mobo. this seems odd as i only had 1 drive connected to my mobo. so the drive i have my OS installed on is now the first hard drive it boots too.
i noticed this after i installed xp on another machine and went to boot in the orignal one. i changed the boot order of the hard drives and now all is well.

what is odd with this mobo (that i have not seen with 5 other models i have owned), you need to specify the exact order the hard drives boot, not just the (normal) hard drive, cd-rom, and floppy, but actually hd0, hd1, etc and then change the "normal" boot order. very odd i have to say. but so far, i am very happy to finally have this thing running.

^^ yeah, i have seen that more and more as well, if you have multiple HD's in, you can now specifiy specifically which one, it is a nice touch, but as you experienced, it can cause headaches.

the odd thing is, when trying to install xp, i only used 1 hard drive.
i didnt notice this option for my a8v5x for my gaming machine. maybe because i only have 1 drive (raptor 150) in it and i didnt have to mess with all that crap. ah well. hopefully i remember this for the next system i build (probably will since i had a dickens of a time trying to get it working).
