Hey all,

I have been having some problems installing Windows on a new system. The system seems to run just fine and boot from CD to format/install windows. However, after the initial Windows XP Setup phase (after it is done "Copying files to directories") and it says the computer will now reboot, the computer does not reboot by itself. What's more is that I have to turn it off via the PSU switch in the back, because the otherwise-working power switch stops working. I am not sure, but I also think USB devices lose connectivity/power as well.

After restarting the system, the Install will proceed to the graphical phase just as it normally would. However, once it gets to the "Installing Devices" part (the first thing it says it's doing), the system hangs, and a manual restart via the PSU switch is needed again.

I have tried everything I can think of, from BIOS settings and BIOS flashes, to memory configurations and placements. I have also used two different optical drives and video cards, all with the same results.

I haven't the slightest idea of what to do next.

Sorry in advance if this is more of a hardware problem than an Operating System one.

Right now I am trying to see if there is some kind of SATA trickery going on.

Any ideas are appreciated

Thanks,

Are you installing 3rd party SATA drivers via F6 or Fsomethingorother during installation? I seem to remember having a similar installation problem with the drivers that came with my drive.

If you are, don't use them let SP2 install its SATA drivers.

It worked for me, hope it resolves your trouble.

Do you need to load SATA controller drivers, or are they auto-detected? Have you run memtest yet?

the SATA drive is detected in BIOS and everything. No, I have yet to run memtest86. I did, however, attempt to install using just one stick (tried for each), to no avail.

Just because the SATA drive is detected in the BIOS, doesn't mean it's being detected by the OS properly.

get the boot disk for the Drive, be maxblast or whatever and write 0's to the drive than try again, Make sure the drive is compelty clean before you try to install again.
