View Full Version : Good switches for LANs?

I'm interested in purchasing an 8-port or larger switch for gaming on LAN. Currently my Linksys 8-port only gives me 5-20 ms pings. I'm wondering if there is anything better within a reasonable price range?

My pings tell me <1ms to other machines on my D-Link DGS-1008D gigabit switch.

Are you pinging by name or by IP?

I get the same response either way, but it's something to try. If it's faster by IP, you could try going to static addresses and use host file entries to see if that will speed up name resolution. Whenever possible in games, use the IP instead of the name of the machines.

Same here. I go through 2 of them with <1ms no problem.

The Linksys/Cisco SD and SR series switches are really nice, great performance.
Compex makes some good performing switches with decent backplanes, for the price.
If your pings vary that much though...I'd look at a few other things that may be affecting it. An 8 port switch..I can't see the switch being at fault for a variance of that much on a simple little LAN party.

I got 5-20 ping in game between 2 pcs. The game, Descent3, showed pings from 5-20 ms. On my netgear router the pings were from 40-60 ms.

A router will always ping slower then a switch. Some "routers" in actuality are a router with a 4 port switch patched into it, where some actually go up to the layer 3 data on every packet sent through. Getting a dedicated managable switch should get your pings down to 1ms as long as you are not having the switch analyze anything and is blindly passing frames.

Don't use any in-game ping utility for network analysis.

Close all games, internet browsers, etc. and do a ping from the command prompt to another machine on your LAN. That's the number you want to see.

That is exactly the kind of information I needed to know!

I guess now what I need to figure out is the most economical gaming switch.
