Quakecon has finally been announced!
We know you all have been waiting to find out about QuakeCon 2006, and we want to thank you for your patience. We’ve had some unexpected issues locking in the dates and location, but don’t worry, we’re still bringing you another kick-ass QuakeCon event, and it’s already right around the corner - August 3 – 6 in Dallas, TX at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in their Trinity Exhibition Center.
With about 1,800 BYOC spots, QuakeCon 2006 will be a bit more exclusive than it has been the last couple of years, but we hope people will enjoy the more personal touch this year. QuakeCon 2006 will of course include all the great activities that it’s known for, including high-stakes tournaments, workshops, exhibitors, the BYOC Area, parties, and the public’s first chance to play Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.

I'm rather torn....
I want to go...but given the very short notice...I dunno.
I'll be trying, at the very least. I can always give up my spot if needbe...
Sadly, I think I'll be stuck on my T43 with a paltry x300...I'm not ready to buy the gaming laptop I'd wanted to....damned Meroms are just too tempting

They said i will be publically playable there. Which means that it will most likely be running on a set of PCs like quake 4 was last year.

It doesn't matter if you are 1 or 1000 away from a guaranteed spot. You all end up in the same line at quakecon anyways which is on a first come first served basis. This line starts moving after all the guaranteed registrants are in (usually around noon).

There are plenty of hotels within walking distance if you can't get a room at the Hilton. Sleeping in your car is not recommended at all due to the Texas heat, and sleeping in the BYOC is prohibited by the event, and the hotel. Violates vagrancy and fire code laws, and the hotel can have you thrown out for it. Check the qcon forums for the list of hotels in the area.

After reading Kyle's post on the QC forums I was saddened also. I also think it was ridiculous how late the event was announced and how the BYOC has shrunk. The ball was dropped this year. Kyle mentioned an alternate even, I would like to see [H]ardCon next summer, if the people running QC don't care enough to get these things worked out in advance someone should step up and take charge for the greater good!

From what I know, a lot of the schedule problems this year were out of id's control as they had problems securing a venue. Not many places capable of taking us all on every year, especially with the bad seeds we always have.

I wonder how many bad seeds the World Series of Video Games/Intel Summer Championship just had? They didn't have any problem getting space at the Gaylord last weekend. I don't know who but someone dropped the ball big time. I don't expect any answers to be forthcoming, either.

QuakeCon had many issues with Gaylord last year, and many gamers that attented also had issues, and therefore requested a new venue, so they set forth to find one, and you take what you can get I guess.

QFT. gaylord didn't like quakecon, quakecon didn't like gaylord. how many other conventions in the DFW metroplex has a hotel and convention center with the necessary size available? not too many. that's what made gaylord so nice. but the thing is, quakecon is a fundamentally FREE event. any time something is free, it's bound to attract the idiots of anywhere. also, people are always going to whine and complain, "id dropped the ball etc etc" and to be honest, unless i see kyle posting on his own forums, i very much doubt the other kyle on the qcon forums is the real one.
in other news:
with spiketv being a sponsor this year, it can either be a very good thing, or a terribly annoying thing.
Tytanium
07-23-2006, 06:32 PM
I believe the change in venue was a result, in part, of several drunken idiots last year. And, as drunken idiots are wont to do, a sink and a urinal were torn out of a bathroom wall in the hotel. Gaylord security was, shall we say, displeased.
So far, from what I've heard, is that Qcon will be at the Gaylord again in 07 and 08, but don't quote me on that, it's only a rumor.

Pros:
- Close to me as Always
- Still had alot to do
- I think more people showered this year, much less smelly
-QuakeWars (I finally got to play it, its was pretty good, but nothing to cream yourself over)
-Great A/C inside, Sometimes I actually felt cold... (Which is a HUGE feat)
Cons:
-No Bawlz (And lack of ANY kind of Beverages)
-Lack of volunteers (I lost my place in line to unfxck up what was going on the first night cause people were just wandering around aimlessly)
-Slow internet connection (Steam blocked)
- I got Fxcked by Agiea... Twice.. (While winning my card I missed my name in the quickdraw, then ont he 3rd day, they drew my name for another 2gb of RAM and wouldnt give it to me cause I had already won)
-All events were overlapping, very uncoordinated
-No one was playing any LAN games worth playing.. I think the most popular LAN game was That TRON type game..
-The Bubble Guy (When he was in the BYOC line) (When on mainstage he was fine)
-There was no case contest (That I know of).. not to mention, i think there was maybe 5 total completely custom cases..
There was SOO much wrong with this QC, but it was probbably due to the lack of prep time they had.. Personally, i didnt like the hotel cause i had to walk what felt like 10 miles from my room to the BYOC.. I won some stuff, my roomate won a lot more.. But hopefully all this shit will get sorted out by next year...

It was very nice temp at night, but warm during the day.. I don't remember the gaylord getting cold or warm, always perfect.
Power went out for an hour on saturday..
Lack of Bawls, and vendors.
It was fun, but I liked last years way better.
This does not bode well at all for viper and myself and thecompany , who were planning to attend next year. If there is no [H]ard Workshop we will all feel very cheated.
Sorry guys, but id did not invite HardOCP to attend the event this year nor did they ever discuss it with us. After my last post here they did finally get in touch with us. They cited sponsorship issues with last year's workshop as the reasoning for this and then explained how important the workshop is...but failed to ever talk to us about having one this year. Seeing that we do this for free, in fact it cost HardOCP money, and we have given over $100,000 worth of swag to you guys over the last four years alone, I thought we were "sponsors" as well. Apparently we are not even worth a telephone call.
QuakeCon has now fully made the jump from an event that was focused on the gamers that attend to a marketing vehicle to sell id games that is subsidized by the big hardware company's dollar. Yes, sponsorship is a must, but there is a right way and a wrong way to do it. QuakeCon was best when it was just a huge "LAN party" and there were not a bunch of "suits" worried about how much exposure their products are going to get for the dollars they spent. (Or being worried about their competition's getting exposure.) QuakeCon is now all business.
We will find another venue to do the [H] Workshop in that is open and agnostic, and don't worry, we will let you guys know. Sorry we are not there with you this year.
So as a result of them not inviting [H] this year, does Kyle want nothing more to do with them? I know this can only be just speculation now for the next several months, but what other venues are there? From the sounds of several posts, it seems many people felt QC just didnt measure up to any previous year. Is this just a glimpse of things to come? i.e. QC just another interactive commercial?

I also still need a new wardrobe every year, and QC is the perfect time for me to get it.. now only if they had some pants, boxers, and shirts and id be set..
This was my third Quakecon, and yeah, its definantly getting away from being a LAN party, and turning into a giant sales gimmick.. Id love to see QC grow, but it seems every year they have a new way to go against it..

I remember talking to Kyle last year about how QC has changed over the years. He had some ideas on how to make it better, I had a few and a few other people in our group had ideas. The concensus was definitely that QC wasn't heading in the right direction.
Now a year later, QuakeCon could have found itself in a great position as being *the* place to go for LAN gaming. It looks like PAX is fast becoming the LAN destination in the US. QC has really blown it from a lot of angles and lost opportunities.

I think some of the difference is Intel being the main sponsor. I was talking to the Ageia guys and they said that intel pitched a hissy fit when Ageia's machines from Alienware showed up with AMD case badges on them, and wanted to have them removed from the event. In the end they made them cover up the badges with some tape. Turns out they have a rider in their contract that forbids competitors from being represented or something along those lines.

In the end they made them cover up the badges with some tape. Turns out they have a rider in their contract that forbids competitors from being represented or something along those lines.
That's really lame. I would love to see alot of the major competitors have a big debate main stage.

I loved QC, and it was my first one. However, from what I read, I was imagining a huge national event. QC to me felt more like a small home-brewed LAN to me this year. I am definitely going next year though. Maybe it will gain some steam back this year.

Well I for one am happy I didn't make it. Here I was thinking they'd have a huge case contest but I guess not.
That would have been a long drive anyway.

I went, and honestly? I had a blast. I dunno what the whole big hub-bub is about. So Kyle and the QC people had some miscommunication problems, big woop. Its still fun and its still free. Why are you bitching about that?
Because having a strong [H] representation is a big selling point to me when i have 950 miles one way to drive, particularly when i'm bringing other forum members along. In a sense, the [H] is my clan. I liked the idea that it would be a large recognized part of the experience.

i think this years qc was thrown together really fast. i don't have any "proof", but just the fact that it was so late as being "official". I dunno, this was my second one to go to, and my friends and i just stay in the byoc pretty much the entire time, so it feels like a "giant lan" to me....

It was planned, organized and executed in about 6 weeks.

You're not the one forking out tens of thousands of dollars though.

You're not the one forking out tens of thousands of dollars though.True, but it just doesn't seem like the Quakecon spirit to me. Since they're donating alot, they should get more main stage events and stuff, but not allowing an AMD sticker? That's just lame.
