"If you are buying this drive and are not going to use it in a RAID setup then you will likely have problems down the road. Western Digital's tech support has confirmed this and is working to clarify the confusion. The 150GB Raptor "X" (with the window) is the proper choice for NON-RAID installations. Call WD for yourself if you don’t believe me (800) 275-4932"

Is this true? Because thats the drive i'm about to buy, and i won't be running in raid0, because i will only be buying one.

If there is some sort of issue with the drive, I can't imagine a scenario where running it in a raid setup would be helpful (well outside of a redundant array anyway). If anything it would make data loss more likely, certainly not less.

I haven't heard of this supposed *issue* before, but I would bet the poster has probably misinterpreted something.

Bunch of misinformed hogwash.

First of all these WD raid editions are only for redundant RAID. They shortcut much of the error recovery so that the controller/firmware can make a quicker decision whether to kick them out of the array or not. Since raid-0 can't kick drives this doesn't do anything good for raid-0. So for raid-0 you want the non-raid drives. Even in raid-1 and raid-5 you won't get any benefit out of them since their software isn't smart enough anyway.

Second, I think these WD raid editions are either a scam by themself or they cover up fiirmware bugs in the normal WD drives. The whole thing stinks.

what the half-informed customer is talking about is the TLER "feature" on the HDD. The Raptor and RE drives will try to recover a failed read/ write for a shorter time than their desktop counterparts.
