Im wondering if Western Digital made any improvements in the hardware / firmware between the 36GB and 74GB raptor?

Im not reffering to that new raptor with the 16MB cache, just ones with the model numbers WD360GD and WD740GD.

I just heard a lot of complaints about the early 36GB raptor? If one was better id like to use it as my OS drive.

Yes there is quite a diffrence between those. The 36.4 is slower than a modern sata drive out today.

yes, the 36GB raptor isn't really a good choice anymore. Most modern day 7200rpm harddrives will outperform it:

comparison between two WD740GD revisions, the WD360GD and the WD2500KS

There is a new version of the 36GB Raptor out though.
The one that uses the same firmware and cache as the 150GB Raptor, just like the new 74GB. But I haven't seen anything on it, though.
It should be a lot faster than the older version of the 36GB, but still not as fast as the 74GB or the 150GB. Data density counts for a lot of the speed increase.

yes, the new 74GB raptor should be the sweet spot, since it has a single platter and features the same density as the 150GB raptor. However, if the 36GB raptor uses the same platter, but shortstroked, it may even be better. All this is speculation until we get some reviews.
