I have a XP Pro SP 2 system.

I get past the black Windows screen. I get to the blue Windows XP screen but no user login icons show up. CTRL ALT DEL does not help me either.
Doing this in safe mode is the same as well.

Just a backgound on what happened..........

I ghosted(2003) this image from another working XP Pro SP 2 system of mine(slightly older) and then restored that image on this hard drive.

I have used Ghost before many times.
The image itself checks out ok--so I know that's not it.

Any ideas?

Bring up the task manager (Ctrl+Alt+delete) or (Ctrl+Shift+Escape) and go to File, then Run, type explorer.exe

See if that loads everything up. If so....I don't know for now but see if that works =)

I cant login into Windows.

CTRL ALT DEL wont get me a login icon for the 2 users that were setup on this machine.

have you let it sit there for say, 10 minutes?
sometimes if a service/program hangs, the window takes a while to pop up

how about safe mode? does that work?

Yes...I gave it some time.

It does the same thing in safe mode.

What happens if you hit CTRL+ALT+DEL twice, to bring up the domain style login screen? If so, try and log in that way.

I dont get a login regardless of what I do.

It might be a good time to run a repair install then.

hmm
at this point I would probably take my XP PE disc and boot up with it. I would check for startup items, etc.

if that fails.... I would probalby head towards a reinstall/repair. Spend more time diagnosing than just fixing.... since this is a fairly rare thing, it's not worth (to me anyways) to keep diving in further in fixing it.

Agreed. OP, do you know how to do a 2nd repair?
