So, my shiney new Opty 165 arrived today, replacing a 146. I popped in the cpu, went in to windows no problem, and insalled the AMD CPU driver. Reboot, installed the Multiprocessor PC driver, reboot, and we get stuck at the loading screen. Doesn't freeze, just sits there. So I try safe mode, stops at mup.sys. So, I restart and hop into Vista. Took the mup.sys off my XP cd, and replaced it. Tried to boot XP again.... and instead of getting stuck on mup, it just doesnt load it at all, and gets stuck on the next thing in line.

I am in Vista now, so I have the ability to mess with just about any files on my XP install. Any way to get this operation? I really dont want to resinstall windows, I just did that a month ago.

Run an in-place (not parallel) repair install.

Does that not still wipe out my registry, thereby forcing me to reinstall everything?

No, it maintains the registry, well the parts you are talking about. :p

Also, and I know this is a bit late... But if you had done this (http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=772307) first, you wouldn't have this problem.

Good luck.

Well, I know steps like that are necessary for the mobo... just never thought they would be for the processor. I have swapped them in and out of my PC constantly never affecting my windows install. This is my first dual core chip though, just didnt think it would be different.

EDIT: New issue... perhaps I should make a new thread in AMD Forum for this one... but i'll try here first. Previously, it saw two CPU's. When I loaded up SP04, it said dual core CPU found, and I should run two instances, and I had the option to choose which instance ran on which CPU. That option went away... ok. Started one instance, took CPU usage up to 100%, not 50% like it should. Started a 2nd and they leveled off to 50% each. Checking hardware manager, it shows two cpus and a multiprocessor PC driver... so why does SP04 act as though I only have one? Am I still fine?

You went from basically a single processor setup to an SMP setup, which has always required prep work for the OS. In the past you probably swapped processors that were nearly identical except for speed.
