Had to reformat, how do i get to my old files?

did a non destructive reinstall (left all the old user files) and i was wondering how to get to them,.the directory is there, and some program recognize the sub directories but it says write protected... any idea how to get around it?

Google "take folder ownership" and that should get your stuff back
