According to this link you should be able to pick up and OEM copy of Windows Vista for around $60. Hmm. Anyone else have any ideas on Vista's pricing?

It'll probably be about 20 bucks at the Purdue Boiler Copymaker.

I hate how MS punishes system builders by charging for retail 10x what they charge everyone else. What is wrong with them anyway?

You can buy the OEM's which are generally 300 dollars cheaper...

They don't seem to in the least.

You too can buy an OEM copy with hardware, and get XP Pro for about $130. And it will have just the same EULA restrictions as what they have for the big guys- you'll only be allowed to run it on the system whose hardware you were purchasing.

This isn't the first time MS has released an OS. Their price structure will be similar to what it always is. That being said, who really cares. Every app that I want to use runs on XP, so why bother paying Uncle Bill for more bloatware?

If it is $450 a copy, then it is going to be pirated like mad.

id rather spend that money on hardware... 400+ is pure insanity. if you wanna blow your wad on that, please do so!

Here is a list I would like to see. Disreguarding hardware support, which free open-source apps are necessary to approximate the Vista Ultimate version functionality on the Vista Basic version?

Microsoft (to my knowledge), has released nothing on pricing for Windows Vista. Any talk of the Ultimate Edition costing $450 retail is pure speculation (and quite frankly, it sounds like bull to me).

OEM copies will also likely be much more restricted and harder to find, or at least that's what Microsoft hopes for. A copy of WIndows now has to now be sold with a complete computer system, not just a single piece of hardware and must come preinstalled on that system if I recall correctly. I find it very unlikely Microsoft will succeede in keeping OEM editions of Windows Vista from being sold, but anything is possible (especially when you have billions of dollars to invest in compating such measures).

Most people also won't need or be able to use Ultimate.

Vista Home Premium will probably be their biggest seller.
